I hadn't heard about the whole kerfuffle until last night when I logged onto facebook and several of my nurse friends had posted about it. I'm a hospital social worker, and have worked next to nurses for 10 years in this role. I have nothing but respect and admiration for nurses, and the way these "ladies" spoke about nurses is deplorable. I hope they hear the backlash this has caused and they make a public apology to the profession.

@MrsF: I agree with @snowjewelz: I was in the hospital for 6 weeks and now my babies are in the nicu. I learned so many things from the nurses. They work so hard and they report to the Drs and some have been in their departments for so long that they are so very knowledgeable. My nurses were amazing. Yeah, some were better than others but overall, I fully respected and admire nurses.

If *all* the Miss America contestants had to talk about what they *really* do for a living, versus a dog and pony show, I would respect the process a whole helluva lot more. I think what she did was ballsy and awesome. And part of me wonders why it took so damn long for this to even happen!

I did read a funny satire article about the stethoscope, which I laughed about. But....satire.

@NavyRN2012: I'm glad you wrote this. I didn't watch this but it was all over my coworker's fb newsfeeds and made me so angry just to read it! People have absolutely no idea what nurses do. I'm a critical care RN and I can't even tell you how many times a week Drs ask to borrow my stethoscope because they don't use theirs as often and don't have one on them! Nurses in the ICU do a physical assessment (which, you know, requires a stethoscope) of our patients every four hours - 24 hours / day or more often if it's needed. Every time something silly like this comes up I'm reminded that people just have no idea what nurses do...

I thought it was great to see her come out in a her uniform. Instead of showing off skills that are for entertainment purposes like singing and dancing, she showed off her skills and reality of being a nurse. Definitely something different and outside the box.

@NavyRN2012: I fell in love with Miss Colorado after seeing her nurse monologue in preliminaries! I watched the view excerpt earlier today and it made me so mad. There definitely is a knowledge deficit when it comes to what nurses actually do, though. Before I started nursing school, even I had no idea how much we do and how much is involved truly! AND I use my stethoscope every day - it's a nurse's primary piece of equipment! It is not merely a doctor's tool.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would associate a doctor more with a "white coat" than just scrubs. and I agree about preaching empowerment and not practicing it - they continued to mock the Miss America contestants and it was very poor form.
@LuLu Mom: I really wanted her to win too. I may be bias as a nursing student - but I loved that she put herself out there and did something so different. Nurses are definitely NOT talentless and even though I'm still in school, it takes A LOT to get through just school - much less actually working as a nurse.

@LuLu Mom: I agree Miss CO and Miss Georgia/ (new Miss America )singing opera had the best talent.

First off nurses use stethoscopes too, so the fact people called it a 'doctor' tool makes me cringe. I watched and thought this was by far the BEST and original talent (besides opera girl who killed it.) it wasn't some girl dancing or some girl singing some ridiculously cliché song from Sound of Music or pop song, it was a real life experience that people can relate too, I was pulling for her and world have been proud if she represented America.

I watched the pageant and teared up during Miss Colorado's monologue. I don't see what was funny about it. Yeah she looked like a doc with the stethoscope, but that is probably the most universally recognized medical instrument to denote a medical professional. Even daycare workers wear scrubs; what would have been better that screamed nurse? Sexy nurse costume from Spirit Halloween? Those ladies preach empowerment and inclusiveness, but don't practice it for sure.

Did anyone watch Miss Colorado's monologue on the Miss America pageant? I didn't watch it live, but I've seen it shared enough on Facebook and thought it was lovely. As a nurse, I can identify with everything she said.
Then I got in Facebook today and saw the ladies of the View making fun of Miss Colorado and the fact that she did a monologue in a nursing "costume" wearing her "doctor's stethoscope".
I never watched the show in the past, and I guess I see why I never did.
I guess I don't know why I'm posting except to vent.
