"A little crying never hurt, she's building up those lungs" ummm no, I'm not going to just let her cry. Also, "Don't breastfeed, its too much of a pain, it hurts, its messy and you won't like it anyway"...glad I didn't listen to that advice because breastfeeding is the best choice I've made so far.

Oh my gosh those practices sound like complete torture- don't night feed baby no matter how young, spank your 6 mos old, don't play with your child, don't nurse after 9 mos... Good. Grief!!

Thankfully I surround myself with people who have only given me quality advice so I haven't heard anything too preposterous!

I can't stand when family tells me to "just let her cry" (she's 8 weeks). She's so little! I don't want her to think that if she has a need, I won't answer.

DH and I were just discussing what we think is bad advice that people are always giving us. LO is 16 months and still prefers to hold our hands while walking, and EVERYONE tells us to just let go of her hand. Like we haven't thought of that one.

But if we let go of her hand, she won't just walk off like a normal baby would, she stands there and starts crying and freaks out and won't move. Thanks for the advice though people.

@Arden: I've read about elimination communication too - I feel like it's practiced more frequently in some cultures?

The potty training newborns part of that article is totally true- it's called elimination communication and I know people who have done it.
I'm not commenting on whether or not this practice is good for babies or not, but it certainly can work.

I've always thought "But you'll spoil the baby!" was pretty stupid advice.

Interesting article from Slate.com with a roundup of the worst baby advice ever given:

http://mobile.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2012/11/bad_baby_advice_a_history.html

I don't know about you, but a lard bath sounds perfectly reasonable - NOT!
