I lived in the middle of nowhere, the kind of place where the only thing open on Sunday was the gas station and they didn't stock baby items, we also had no one to send out for stuff, nor did we have access to Amazon...gosh, it sounds worse than it actually was.

I was extremely unprepared for the first few weeks, even though I had onesies in sizes up to 18 months. I had been preparing for a baby that was at least 8 pounds, so I had exactly 2 newborn sized sleepers. My husband had to go out and get small items, he literally was calling me from the store, I could have done without that.

If I could do it all over again:
1 small package of newborn sized diapers, I was changing my son a lot because I hadn't really learned the timing of his eliminations
1 tube of diaper cream of your choice
at least 5 newborn sized sleepers, inexpensive ones
1 pack of newborn onesies
2 pair newborn sized pants with feet ( i don't know the proper names)
5 pairs of socks
one knit cap
1 pack of prefold diapers to use as burp cloths
2 swaddles blankets of your choice, knowing they might not work and you need to try something else
2 receiving blankets to use as baby mats, they spit up, you don't want it on your couch or rug
Chux pads or waterproof mattress pad for you to sit on
Preparation H, just in case
Tucks pads, dermaplast, peri bottle for all bathrooms

We also ended up formula feeding, which I hadn't prepared for, so my husband had to also buy formula, bottles, a warmer and he insisted on a sterilizer.

I would make some meals to put in the freezer and stock up on snacks you like. Anything that is easy to grab.

As for baby stuff if you have the basics then you are set.

Like @T.H.O.U.: said, I'd organize the house so you can relax once baby is here.

@Keybee I'm due in 2 months and most of my "stock up" stuff that I'm buying is more stuff for me and the household, like: TP, paper towels, extra deodorant, lotion, shampoo, makeup, toothpaste, etc. - because I don't want to be running out of that stuff. And, some of my "brands" that I like it's easier for me to get what I want now than to make a detailed list for my husband or mom to get later. I figure it doesn't hurt to have extras. I'm also trying to grab extras at the grocery store of stuff like bottled water, etc. to make our lives easier, if I think about it.

It's my first baby so I am not sure really what to stock up on! I have 2 small packs of NB diapers and some wipes - going to wait and see what size/brand we need before I buy a lot. I figure I can send people out for baby stuff if we need it.

Oh! Something else I just did last week, was order some extra contacts because I was getting low. Might be a good idea.

@Keybee: I agree that I would focus on stocking up the house with goodies and food. Also get done any organization that will help make your life easier.

Wipes and cotton balls. We went through those pretty fast at first.

@gingerbebe: what a great idea! I had a really hard time cooking and sitting down to eat too. Will definitely try to stock the fridge with frozen sandwiches this time!

I'll be in the minority and say very little. You need food for the baby (your boobs or formula), you need a place for it to sleep, you need diapers of some sort and you need clothing. You'll also need maxi pads for yourself. But honestly, unless you're single parenting, or you live far away from a big grocery store, you can really just buy the basics and then send someone out for whatever else you need.

Lots of underwear for you that you don't care about and can throw away. I bought a 6 pack of Hanes and wish I had bought more!

Every snack you can think of that you enjoy and are easy to get into. The breastfeeding hunger took me by surprise and I ate everything in sight in the first few days.

We found cloth diapers were better burp cloths than the actual burp cloths they sold. Bigger and super absorbent. When the little ones spit up its pretty surprising how much of it there is.

Nose Frieda, thermometer, baby nail clippers, lots of baby lotion and baby wash, lots of washcloths, lots of waterproof crib pads, and we used Chux pads as changing pad covers. They make a size that is a little bigger than the size of a standard changing pad and they are great for travel or changing in other rooms of the house. A good diaper cream like Triple Paste. Vaseline. A humidifier if you live somewhere that gets dry. Footed zipper sleepers with built in scratch mittens (nobody got time for snaps).

For you, bake lots of muffins and freeze them. Finding time to eat is probably the hardest part for me even now at 9.5 months. Even PBJs can be made in advance and frozen.

Baby Tylenol. You always need it when you don't have it! Get a mirror toy to lay next to Lo dyeing tummy time. They love it! I also agree with books. But for any age, you'll be reading all of them soon. I really liked a book called Cluck and Moo that's black and white and simple that I got at our 6 month well-baby appointment.

Books, both to read to your child and one or two medical/developmental ones like the AAP's guide for infants to age 5.

A first aid kit that's up to date. It's always good to check batteries on thermometers and expiration dates!

Whether you'll want most, some, or any of the items that others consider essential beyond the very basic stuff for eating, sleeping, clothing, and diapering is really personal preference. You'll find your groove as you go, so I wouldn't stock up until you know what works for you.

In the first few weeks I went out for:

Baby d drops
Baby thermometer
Wipes
Diapers
Nasal saline thing ( sorry forgot what it's call but she got a cold and I used this to suck snot out)
Baby sunscreen if it'll be sunny
Sleepers ( personal preference this is all I wanted to dress her in so I ended up getting more than I thought I would)

Wipes and diapers is probably all you'll need lots of! And if you have a diaper genie maybe the refill bags.

I recently asked what diapers I should stock up on and was suprised to learn that diapers are not a one-brand-fits all situation. While I do still plan to get a few more boxes of pampers swadlers & up & up, what else should I be buying?
My nesting instincts want to go shopping!
