Watch for the bullseye and if you have any joint soreness or flu-like symptoms get on antibiotics. I was bitten by a tick with Lyme's Disease and it was awful. I'm fine but I was really sick and the bite turned into a huge blister which scarred for a while.

Ugh. I hate ticks. Usually it involves me trying to get away from it, which is impossible since it's attached to me. Then when I get it off, I chop off it's head with a knife just to make sure it's dead (like a vampire).

Btw, I seem to remember learning that Lyme disease is treatable with antibotics if you catch it early. That's why it's important to monitor the bite.

@lemondrop: Our dogs are on Frontline all year round, but as someone mentioned further up thread, I don't know if that stuff is always effective. I think I'll mention this incident to my vet when the dogs go for their yearlies later in April, just in case she wants to blood test them or anything.

I grew up on a ranch, and where there were cows, there were usually ticks. Our dogs got them all the time before we had great products like Frontline- we had to pick them off. It was just part of life, not something I particularly enjoyed, but it was what it was.

But along with talking to your doctor, you should contact your vet about a tick preventative.

I never saw a tick on me, but did get that crazy circular design that comes with lyme disease after a camping weekend. I just went to the doctor and had to take some meds.

Good luck, hope it all turns out ok!

I grew up in the country and at night we had to check for ticks from playing outside in the pasture or woods.LOL

I'm just glad you found it before it did anything else.

i'm glad you found it! just keep an eye on the spot where it was, and (as gross as this is going to sound) make sure that you got all of his legs out, because they can cause an infection if you leave one behind

my parents house is in the middle of 5 acres of straight forest-type woods, so ticks were a normal part of my childhood - but they still make my skin crawl thinking about them

I grew up going on hikes and exploring the woods all the time so I've had several tick bites. I never had any issue with Lyme disease because my parents got them off within a few hours. The only ticks that freak me out are deer ticks *shudder*.

I'd keep an eye on the bite, but other than being itchy I bet you'll be ok.

I live in Florida, which is practically tick central, but they still completely disgust me. We're outdoorsy people, too, so it's not totally uncommon for one of us to pick them up. I think we probably get them more often then the dogs, honestly. And without and hard freezes this winter, I can guarantee this summer is going to be the worst!

I know quite a few people who have lyme disease, so it is good to keep an eye on it, but like Mrs. Wagon said, it's really easy to get incorrect blood results, so don't completely panic.

I had a lyme disease scare when I had shingles. Apparently it's really tough to diagnose Lyme Disease and one out of 7 tests they did on my blood was positive, so a nurse called and told me I tested positive. But my primary care (who happens to specialize in infectious diseases, score) explained that it takes 5 positives out of the 7 tests to test positive, and even then it's not guaranteed that it's actually Lyme. Ugh.

Anyway, good luck... and if you didn't find blood (and the tick wasn't filled with blood... it would have been really noticeable if it was) then it probably didn't break the skin and probably couldn't have infected you anyway. It may have just been hanging out on your back and scratched you when you took it off.

I found a tick crawling on my dog once. So weird because we are not in a woodsy area and our dogs are total indoor dogs. He was in our bed at the time, too. YUCK. Rob Sr. took it, smashed it, burned it, then flushed it. We HATE bugs. We especially like to scream in their face after they're definitely dead and say things like "that's what you get for coming into our house, mother f-er" ;)

Thank you MrsTilly for sharing your experience with ticks. The spot is on my back, so it's hard for me to see it, but my co-workers have looked. Right now it just looks like a scratch on my back. I looked at a map of Lyme Disease and it doesn't look like it's a big concern here, but I certainly don't want to mess around with it. I just heard back from my dr. and he said at this point, he doesn't need to see me, but I need to keep a close eye on the mark on my back. If I start to have a fever or it takes on the bulls eye shape, I need to come in right away. So hopefully that's ok and we can just move on. I am still worried about my dogs at home though... We've been dog owners for 4 years and haven't dealt with anything like this, but I think that's rare as some of my co-workers say they've had ticks on their dogs. But our dogs spend most of the time in our backyard which is not woodsy at all. In fact, there aren't any trees in the backyard at all! It definitely makes me feel like we need to be very diligent about it in the future (especially when we have kids).

I hate ticks!

If a bullseye rash were to develop it takes at least 3 days but could be as long as a month, so keep an eye on it.

But the good news is that most people think it takes the bacteria that causes lymes disease at least 24 hours and probably more like 2 days to transmit. So the tick would have had to be biting for 24 hours for you to get lymes disease (and not all ticks have lymes disease). So more than likely you found it before 24 hours (and they crawl awhile before biting).

What kind of tick medicine do you use on your dog? We've found them not all effective. So def check the pup tonight with a fine tooth comb.

You should take some pictures of the red spot where it had bit you. Does it resemble a bullseye at all? That's the hallmark of a tick bite. The main concern with a tick bite is Lyme Disease. I don't know what kind of ticks you have out there or if Lyme is present in that area, but where I live deer ticks are everywhere and Lyme Disease is a huge concern.

Not to freak you out, but if it is misdiagnosed or you don't seek treatment, Lyme Disease can be awful. Two of DH's aunts have Lyme Disease and one is barely able to move. I don't say this to scare you, but to make sure that you look into the possibility of Lyme Disease and seek treatment for it. Some doctors are very resistent to treating it.

We had our dog on Advantix and combed through him every time he came inside and we still battled ticks in our house. After DS was born and I saw one in the bathroom right next to DS's leg, we gave our dog to my grandmother. We tried to keep the ticks off our dog and even treated our lawn and kept our dog away from the bushes and woods at the back of our property, but it didn't help. I couldn't risk DS's health. But our dog is incredibly spoiled and my g-ma loves him so it worked out for the best.

(Uh, don't read this if bugs freak you out because I go into a lot of details - I'm sorry!)

You guys, I am freaking out. This morning when I got out of bed, I felt something itchy on my lower back (just below my underwear line). I scratched at this little lump and next thing I know, THERE IS A BUG IN MY HAND.

I was still mostly asleep and the first thing I thought was "this is not a flea" (not that we have fleas, but I have dogs and fleas happen sometimes) and then I thought "and if this is a bed bug, it is the world's largest bed bug." I have a major bed bug phobia (even though I don't live in a big city and it's not really an issue here) so I was sort of relieved that it was too big to be a bed bug. Somehow, I kept my calm, ordered the dogs out of bed and downstairs, deposited the mystery bug (THAT HAD THESE DISGUSTING LEGS THAT WERE MOVING) onto the bed and grabbed my phone to take a picture. I still can't believe that I wasn't screaming and freaking out at this point. I think that I must have thought if I could get a picture of it, I could take it to one of the naturalists at work and maybe they'd be able to identify it.

In the meantime, I take a shower (wait, first I disposed of the body, obviously!) and realize that it's probably a tick because we went walking near the woods with one of our dogs on Sunday. You guys, I am not even a nature-y person! I seriously venture into nature ONE TIME and I somehow get a tick on myself. Actually, I think Helo probably had the tick on him and it jumped onto me, but STILL. Our dogs are up-to-date on their flea & tick meds, but I am nervous that there are more on them. My husband and I are going to look them over really carefully tonight.

At work I showed the picture to a bunch of co-workers (not naturalists, just regular marketing girls like me) and everyone thinks it's definitely a tick. Also, we think the head is visible in the picture and I guess that's important. Oh, and also, because we're very intimate in this office, haha, we all crowded into the bathroom and I pulled down my pants so they could look at the spot where the bug was (since it was red this morning, I circled it with a pen because that seemed like a good idea at the time). It is still red and itchy but everyone seems to think it looks ok.

Regardless, I called my doctor's office and talked to a nurse. She's going to talk to my doctor and find out if he wants to see me. I told her that we're trying to get pregnant, in case that makes a difference (I'm 2 dpo today).

So anyway, has this ever happened to anyone else? Did you freak out like me? Did you spend the rest of the day washing your hands a million times? Did you have to see a doctor (and if so, what did the doctor do?)

**oh and I put this in TRAVEL because the idea of putting a thread about ticks under HOME made me want to throw up**
