I'm following along with these suggestions. We use a Braun ear on ourselves and cannot get a consistent temp with it either. It will be off by a couple of degrees each recording. So I need a new one at some point.

@cascademom: Ah, I tried orally and he gagged. After that he wouldn't let me do it again.

We use this after our peds said that the forehead one was pretty ineffective for anyone over the age of 1.

@peachykeen: Thanks for the tip. That's the problem I have with the Braun ear thermometer.

We use the rectal thermometer for the most accurate temps, but we like the Exergen for a pretty close approximation. Unless I get a very high reading on the Exergen, I don't feel the need to confirm with the rectal.

DON'T buy the Innovo brand - the reading is different every time you take it!

We have the exergen forehead thermometer, and I like it! It took some practice and a YouTube video to get the hang of it, but it works well now. I made my husband play guinea pig when we first got it and took his temperature many times over the course of that weekend, haha.

ETA: I found the armpit difficult because it needs to be really snug in there to get an accurate reading, and it took a long time to complete. So I basically had to pin my son's arm down while he was squirming and getting pissed. Not ideal.

My 4 year old has been down with a fever all weekend. I can feel that he's hot and that the fever comes down with Tylenol, but I can't get an accurate temp on him. We have a Braun ear thermometer that I've never gotten an accurate temp with. A Safety first that has different probes for axillary, oral, and rectal. But the axillary temp is coming back at like 94.5 which is obviously not right and he's still too young to figure out the thermometer under the tongue. There's no way I'm going to get a rectal temp on him. We also have another random digital thermometer that wasn't reading right under the arm either. This is really the first time he's been sick enough for me to need to get an accurate temp since he's been too old for a rectal temp.

What kind of thermometer do you use? Why is it so hard to get a thermometer that works!
