We went to Montreal for DS's 2nd birthday and had a wonderful time (we had also visited before kids). They have fantastic playgrounds - DS loved them. Another big hit was the Insectarium, a bug museum in the botanic gardens. I like staying in Old Montreal, it's a beautiful area and a good base for exploring the city. And the restaurants are incredible.

@yoursilverlining: @Anagram: I second the Fairmont recommendation. It's beautiful and central.

@Anagram: We only stayed in the old/walled city part and everyone greeted us in both English and French (like they would literally say "bonjour, hello!" when we walked in) and we would respond in English and then the conversation just went in English.

We stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac (highly recommend, beautiful and perfect location!) and everyone who worked there that we encountered was very fluent in English. All the shopkeepers downtown seemed to have a pretty high fluency in English as well. We didn't run into any language issues, and there was no drama or attitude about using English either.

We did Montreal/Quebec with a 2 year old, and it was a fantastic trip.

Quebec City was our favorite - the carriage ride was a huge hit with our horse-lover, but even just walking around with all the hills (Plains of Abraham) and stairs was a fun activity for her. She was fascinated by the Funicular, loved playing in the fountains outside city hall even though it was October, and loved the kid-sized door at Benjo, a huge toy store. We had a great hotel in a great location - Hotel du Vieux.

In Montreal, we stayed in the old port area, and went down by the water to see the big cruise ships, also doing the Mount Royal hike one day.

@erinbaderin: yes, Mount Royal is definitely on my list....I walked up last time (pre kids) and that was great. The Biodome looks good too.

@yoursilverlining: good to know....I'd always heard Quebec City is more French but didn't know what that meant exactly. Did you just immediately start conversing/ordering in English or did you try awkwardly in French and then switch? I feel like last time I would awkwardly try in French (again, having never taking a French lesson) and then restaurant servers would immediately switch to English.

I distinctly remember trying to order a coffee double double from Tim Hortons and say something awkward like café deux deux?

following - we were just in Quebec City this past weekend and plan to head up to Montreal this late spring/summer.

FWIW, we didn't need any French at all in Quebec

I haven't been to Montreal in a while but definitely check out the Biodome and a walk on Mount Royal. It depends what you think of as cold but in April you'll probably be fine for walking around with some lined windbreaker style jackets.

You'll also be fine with no French.

We're thinking of taking a 4-5 day trip to Montreal (or possibly 3 days in Montreal and then head up for 2 days in Quebec City?). It would be in April, so I assume it will still be pretty cold.

Any suggestions for things to do with young kids? Any neighborhood/activity/playground/restaurant recommendations?

Also, I've been to Montreal, but it was about 8 years ago and I don't remember--how much French is required to get around, order in restaurants, etc? Because I don't speak French. =)
