Waves might be mellow when you come. North shore rages in the winter. Also check out the Hale Aina awards for great food (and other) recommendations. Stairway to Heaven is not open. People still try it though. I wouldn't recommend that just because it's illegal and you can get fined, especially if they have to come rescue you out of there...happened recently.

Well... Everything else we did was not easily kid-friendly. We snorkeled (by far the best thing we did, but I don't know how you'd do that with a LO). Toured a Kona coffee farm and the Kona Brewing Company. There are lots of good hikes/walks if you guys are into that and want to backpack the LO. The Hilton Waikoloa has lots of fun kid things, but you have to buy a pass I think (if your don't stay there, it's kinda pricey). The farmer's market in Kona had amazingly good, fresh fruit and is very cool to just walk around. Other than that we just lounged a lot!

@Emsmems: I have been to the big island once before for like a day and half. All we saw was the volcano park. What else is there to do on the Big Island?

If lava is visible from the ground, that would be cool to see. When we were on the big island it wasn't, but it changes all the time. You'd have to just keep an eye on the reports for that.

I have seen that there are some Hawaiian bee's on here. I am hoping for some pointers. (I have lived on Oahu previously)

We are traveling to the Hawaiian islands here in October for 10 days. DS will be just over a year old. I can't seem to remember what shore the high waves will be on. I would love to go out to Shark's cove with DH and DS but if the North shore is raging then it won't work.

We will be island hopping to Kauai, and perhaps the Big Island.

I want to show DH so much of the Islands that I enjoyed, and more....I am hoping someone can point us in a good direction.

PS: Do you know if the stairway to heaven is really open?
