I can recommend Seaside and Cannon beach in Oregon. We were there last year and they were beautiful!

@JMOM: the zoo in Portland is great, my DH and DD much preferred it to our local one (Seattle). I was working so I couldn't go. The zoo is part of a huge park that has a great playground, Japanese Garden, and other attractions. We went to OMSI but got there late and didn't have much time to see anything. There's also a train museum right near OMSI that looked neat!

In WA, you have lots of options depending on what you want to see. Olympic National Forest is really beautiful, but there's not much else to do. WA beaches aren't particularly exciting, for the most part. But there are great hikes (some that are good for kids) both on the Olympic peninsula and around Mt. Rainer. In/around Seattle, there is Pike Place Market, Seattle Center (home to the Space Needle and the Pacific Science Center, among other things). The Ballard Locks are kind of neat if you come in the summer when the salmon are running -- there's a viewing area and my DD loves to see them swim by. The Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) is supposed to be good for kids, though we haven't taken DD yet -- I think your kids are good ages for it. Also, the Museum of Flight could be good if they like planes. A little further north, the San Juan Islands are gorgeous.

@youboots: ours is a Coleman tent trailer. We have stayed in it the whole time. We've been doing a lot of beach combing, exploring tide pools, etc. we plan on going up highway 101 most of the way, other than Portland and Seattle. Are there any good museums, parks, etc., in Portland that a 7 and 4 year old would like? I'll look up Forgery State Park and Ling Beach. Thanks.

Hi! I have a pop top VW camper too! Are you staying in Hotels or Camping the whole time? Forgery Creek State park near Lincoln city Ore is one of my favorite beaches. Portland is so huge, what do you want to see/do? If you come from the coast through wine country you will be right in my area. Anne Amie is a cool vineyard for kids since they have hammocks. Lunch at Red Hills market is awesome- super fun and family friendly. Astoria does not have a sandy beach but downtown is amazing- Rouge is on the water and famous for beer. If you want the best sandy beach that you can drive on check out Long Beach, WA about 40 minutes North.
