@Mama Bird: Nope, but I imagine it's better for the blade--less abrasive as said above, less chance of getting knocked around, lower water and drying temps. I do know about not putting wood in dishashers though. DH ruined his fav wooden spoon in the dw a few years back. Good thing it was easy to replace :silly:

I always boil water before drinking it. We're lucky to have good tap water that doesn't require filters or boiling, but I can't think of something that just came from a tap as drinkable. Then again... It does kind of make sense. As often as the water supply gets tested, there's still a chance of something nasty being missed for a short time, and the insides of old taps are probably pretty gross.

@MrsLonghorn: fascinating! My family hasn't been observant for generations, but the idea of treating books with respect is like breathing. I've only thrown away a book once, and I felt like I'm committing a monstrous crime (it was a really awful book and I wanted it out of the house ASAP, and still...)

@karenbme: do the knives have wood handles? My parents put everything in the dishwasher, and they've ruined every utensil that has wood handles, including their best knives.

@karenbme: I think the dishwasher is more abrasive and can dull the knives faster. At least, that's what I was told.

@Foodnerd81: I can tell you that the reason for the dryer sheet one! The oils in the sheets can build up inside the dryer and could potentially start a fire. At least that's what the guy who sold us our dryer said. That said my family always used them growing up and DH and I have used them in the new dryer for six years and never had any problems, so grain of salt. The salesman wasn't trying to sell us something instead of dryer sheets just advising us on how to take care of the new machines.

I hand wash kitchen knives rather than putting them in the dishwasher. Intuitively it seems better, and I've heard that it is, but I have no idea why.

@Foodnerd81: ha, my DH is from NJ and I have definitely noticed that a place might be 5 miles away but it takes like 20minutes to get there somehow so I totally understand why you’d use minutes!

@Foodnerd81: I think distance in minutes actually is location based! Like, in Los Angeles telling someone that the exit is about 15 minutes down the highway means a LOT less than someone in New England stating the same thing (I say this as someone from New England with baffled family members that live near LA).

For me, there were a lot of wedding related things that we "just did" even though we didn't care (see: guest book). Less so with baby things EXCEPT for throwing a first birthday party. Like, we're DOING one, but only because we're supposed to?

@codeitall: I usually do scribe driving distances in minutes (like the store is 10 minutes away). This drives my friend nuts and she just wants to know miles (the store is 7 miles away). Her husband does it my way and she’s convinced it’s because we are both from NJ.

A little different, but I always use references to landmarks when I'm driving. DH's family uses mile markers and it drives me nuts. Who knows where mile marker 243 is in the middle of nowhere in Montana? But Butte? Yeah, I know where Butte is.

It is totally based on our parents too. My parents use landmarks, his mile markers.

I always leave my socks on in the house and typically my shoes as well. (This may be a learned habit of cold feet and lego-filled floors.)

@erinbaderin: hmmm you sound like my 4 year old... :silly: but I do get it. Or like if I hear something is bad for you and something people don’t like about it, I have that in my head when I try it.

I thought of one more- I almost always squeegee the glass shower door. I know you are supposed to, but not the exact reasoning. Apparently mine are all about cleaning.

@crazydoglady: interestingly, observant Jews try not to let holy books touch the ground. "Sacred books should always be placed in a respectful place. Therefore, one should not lay them on the floor. When picking up a sacred book which has fallen to the ground, it is customary to kiss it as a sign of love and respect for God's teachings. For the same reason, it is customary to kiss a sacred book when closing it and putting it away."

Going one step further, observant Jews do not throw out old sacred texts - they bury them! In some communities, this even includes basic children's worksheets with God's name on them. "It is forbidden to destroy or desecrate any sacred or religious book, whether it is written in Hebrew or any other language. One must similarly be careful with worn or torn books, and even with loose and torn pages from sacred books. All these should be set aside in a special storage and eventually buried."

@erinbaderin: Lol me too! I also have myself convinced that I might be allergic to shellfish. There's literally no reason for this - I have no other allergies. It's just...because I never ate it....I might be allergic!

I have a hard time placing a bible on the ground/floor. I always thought it was a universal thing until I went to other churches and was like "nope, just my family!"

I’m not sure if this is exactly the same, but I don’t eat shellfish because I think I don’t like it, except I’ve never eaten it so I might like it, except I’ve spent so long thinking “yuck, shrimp” that I can’t even bring myself to try it.

Do you have things you do (or don’t do) because “they” said to? Like for me, I almost never use bleach because an old landlord once told me it would damage the washing machine. I have no idea if this is true or not but I don’t want to risk damaging a machine I own now! Same for dryer sheets- different landlord told us not to so I don’t, and can’t tell you why. Same for using a different sponge for the counter vs the sink- my mom asked me why and I was like... I just know you’re supposed to. :silly:

All of these things seem like a good idea so I haven’t questioned them too much.

I’m not the only one, am I?
