In 5th grade we were learning about drugs and my teacher told us a story about a man who did LSD and years later, he was living a normal life and had a flashback and jumped out of the window of his NYC apartment to his death. She said it stays in your system forever. Well she succeeded in scaring the crud out of me and preventing me from ever doing acid!!

@Vegmama: @Danizaur: I also touched the gear shift while playing alone outside and the car came about half an inch from hitting my parents house!!! I ran inside HYSTERICALLY crying. My mom kept trying to calm me down and get me to tell her what happened but I just kept yelling that I couldn't tell her because she would be mad at me. When they finally went outside and saw what I did I didn't even get in trouble. They decided my hysteria was enough. Plus... They shouldn't have left a five year old outside unattended!!!!

For me what really sticks with me is that anytime we would see someone smoking my mom would grab me or my brother by the collar and say in a joking but serious way " if you EVER smoke you'll be in BIG trouble". It's really shaped me into being kind of judgy about smoking. Like I can't understand why ANYONE of my generation smokes. Didn't their parents know enough about how bad it is to teach them to never ever do it?

I went to a girl scout overnight. We did bloody mary etc. But telling ghost stories (which I love) there was one about a monster that eats toes. I can't sleep without my toes covered up even now.

My dad always said grades were earned not given. This stayed with me as I took ownership of my effort.

My grandma would tell me not to walk on sidewalk crates because I could fall through. I thought I might fall into hell. Oh boy there was a lot of jumping while I was just supposed to walk.

My grandma also told me God hears what you say and yoyr thoughts, but the devil can only hear what you say. Saying mean things about yourself or others can be used by the devil and we don't need to give him ammunition. This definitely curtailed gossip!

@Danizaur: I did the gear shift thing!!! Rolled down our driveway & into the neighbors yard. I got in BIG trouble for that one.

@Danizaur: ha my mom always drove a manual. So when she would leave me in the car to run into the gas station she would say "if the car starts rolling jump into the drivers seat and push the middle pedal!" I was always scared the car would start rolling back. I drive a manual and when I park it's always in gear plus the emergency brake.

@yoursilverlining: Hahahaha

My cousin told me once when I was about 5 that when you get baptized the preacher holds you under water until you drown and if God loves you enough he will bring you back to life.

It was a long time before I found out that wasn't true.

@birdofafeather: similar. My parents always did okay but when I was younger they were definitely paycheck to paycheck. I can remember several times when things happened like the car breaking down or the fridge breaking and hearing hushed conversations between my parents about what to do and my mom crying. It's always made me really committed to staying out of cc debt and keeping a good emergency fund. I mentioned it to my mom once and she said she felt badly that they like, scarred me for life or something (and they are more than fine now), but I'm glad because it made me really careful financially!

I can't think of anything they said that really affected me for life like the OP is talking about… although my mom did always say there were some things you don't buy off-brand and those things include tampons and condoms, which I think is just good common sense :) And when I was really little (like 4) I loved playing with worms and my mom hated it so she told me that worms have teeth so I'd stop trying to keep them as pets. I started bawling and was terrified to walk in grass in the rain for fear of worms biting me until I was like 10. lol

When I was about 7 or 8, my friend and I were talking to her older teenage sister about periods and we somehow left the conversation with the impression that your period only lasted two HOURS, at max (LOL). My mom laughed so hard when I told her that, and sadly, she set the record straight :silly: it was life-changing to find out a period lasted days and days, not only a few hours!!!

When my brother and I started driving my dad told me this notoriously grouchy old neighbor at the end of the road had called my dad and told him we were driving too fast down the road. I was paranoid that the mean old neighbor was going to come running out to yell at me anytime I drove by so I went incredibly slow by his house every time. Years later I brought it up and my dad told me he made up that story in attempt to get my brother to slow down. I still catch myself crawling past that neighbor's house when I visit my parents lol.

My Grandmother was a deeply religious woman and I always remember her telling me "be sure your sins will find you out". It's always stuck with me and helped me make some good choices in dicey situations!

it wasn't something she said, but i remember when i was a kid, my mom and i went to the bank and her account was at $0. i think my dad had just lost his job because his company moved as well. i was so worried about money and that's really shaped why i'm such a saver now. the thing was, i told my mom that as an adult and she kinda laughed because it was probably just low in their checking account, but good in their savings account as my parents were always really good savers and made good money, even when my dad didn't work for a couple years (he was a SAHD!).

She also told us if you lay down a hair dryer while it's on the house will burn down. I don't know if that is true but I guarantee you I never have done it.

I also overflowed the toilet once and my dad told me not to use too much toilet paper or it would happen again. Now if I feel like if I used slightly too much I get anxiety until it finishes flushing. Hahaha

My sister and I were discussing this the other day! My mom told us thousands of times when we were little to NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER touch the gear shift in the car. If we did, we would go rolling down a hill uncontrollably and die. She made this super clear.

She told us so often that my sister and I both had, and still continue to have, recurring nightmares about rolling away in an runaway vehicle! My sister said mom mentioned once that if she touched the gear shift "the Devil would come up through the car and get you" but I don't remember that. Haha!

When we told mom she gave us nightmares she said she had a complete fear of us actually rolling away in a car. So I can see why she pushed the fear of it on us so much.

What's something your parents told you that impacted you for the rest of your life?

ETA: I changed the title to include more stories...not just things your parents said.
