My friend drove her Civic until it hit 200,000 miles and then she finally got a new car (Honda CRV). She LOVED it! Just make sure it hasn't been in an accident since you'll probably be using it for your LO as well. You can't go wrong with a Honda.

I had a 2001 civic. It was a great commuter car and fit an infant carrier well. We sold it when we got a crossover suv so I can't say how it was with a convertible seat. They also get great resale value.

I just sold my '99 Civic last year. I bought it used in 2001 and love, love, loooved that car. I was sad to let it go but it was time for a bigger car. Mine was 2 doors and there was no way I'd be getting an infant car seat in and out of there. We replaced it with an Accord and I love it also. I'm definitely a Honda girl.

If you go look at it, bring a measuring tape! DH would like an excuse to get a new car so even though we are still TTCing we were measuring the back seat of his car and some car seats yesterday and we found that they were generally 29". So bring a measuring tape and measure the backseat to see if it has that much room. He drives a small car (Nissan Versa) and the only way a car seat will fit is if we put the passenger seat all the way up.

Will you be ok with riding in the backseat in order to fit the car seat?

I don't actually have a car at this point, but my family has had a lot of Civics over the years and have very little to complain about. Minimal repairs on cars that are now 10 years old in some cases. It is worth saying that it's not a great car with a carseat, but it's doable. My sister doesn't drive often, so it's not a big deal, but the car seat takes up a lot of room and it's kind of hard to get the baby in and out of it with the low roof and everything. But, since it would only be when you couldn't have the carseat in the mom car, I think it would be fine. They seem really reliable.

@Adira: I've been in a corolla and I feel like it's smaller than a Civic, inside. But it all depends on the year too. Civics got a lot bigger in 2006; Corollas probably got bigger recently too. All the cars are getting so big!!

@highwire: Oh, haha, that's too bad! Well, I know once the kid is old enough to be turned around (so they are facing forward instead of backwards), there's more space and it's a little less crowded. And then when they move to a toddler seat, there's even more space. So you'd probably only be cramped for a year. Plus it's probably not as bad as I'm making it sound - I know my friend rode in the passenger seat whenever her SO was driving, so I'm guessing it wasn't as uncomfortable as I'm implying.

Come to think of it, I have actually had a car seat in my civic, rear facing when my friend's baby was with me. We had to move the seat up maybe 2 clicks. It was not a problem at all. I don't know what kind of seat she had though.

I love love LOVE my civic. I have no intentions of getting rid of it when baby comes. It's a 2008. I have had it since it was brand new. I have never had a problem with it. Long trips or short, it's very comfortable and surprisingly roomy since it's classified as a smaller sedan. I kind of doubt you'll have trouble fitting a car seat in it. I am tall (5'10") and there is a TON of leg room in the front of the car. I can move the seat up quite a lot and still be comfortable.

@Adira: Thanks for this perspective. The Civic will mostly be used as a commuter car and the car seat will stay in the mom mobile. But, when I go back to work and we have to drop LO off at daycare on the way to work, we'll have to fit the carseat in there.. and I'm about the same height as your friend and would be riding in the passenger seat while DH drives us...

I don't have any Civic specific advice, though my best friend has a Toyota Corolla, which is similar in size to the Civic, and she found it kind of a pain with a carseat. She has to put the carseat on the passenger side because there isn't room behind the driver's seat (she's 5'6"). And if someone has to sit in the passenger seat, the seat is really far forward to make space for the carseat behind it and so there's very little legroom. I'm guessing the Civic would be similar.

I have a Civic now and I will probably trade with DH after Baby 2 is born so I drive our CRV full time. I think it will be doable with a rear facing convertible car seat and a rear facing infant seat but very cramped.

I loved my Civic. I bought a 1999 used in 2002, with about 20,000 miles on it and drove it until 2010 when it had more than 120,000 miles on it. I had treated it like crap and not stayed up on its maintenance and little things kept cropping up on it and I sold it for like $500 to a junkyard, but it never once broke down on me and was always reliable, got great gas mileage, and was the perfect car for me.

Now I drive a 2004 Honda CR-V, that I bought used in 2010, and love it also. I'm much better at maintenance. I bought it with 60somethingK miles on it and now it has just over 100,000 and the only stuff I've needed was a new timing belt and tires and an oil change.

Word of warning, however, the Honda models 2004 and before, had major AC compressor issues so in my 1999 Civic, once I paid it off, the AC broke and stayed that way for many years because I didn't have $1,200 to fix it. Once I got the CR-V, I drove it for one month before the AC gave out. This time I forked over the money (my mechanic fixed it for $800) because I knew if I was making payments on a car with no AC I'd eventually have a fit. I did some research and that's when I found that the issue mainly affected pre-2004 models.

So buy something made after 2004!

We just bought an 09 Civic Hybrid last weekend! We love it so far -- especially since we are averaging over 34 miles per gallon. This is our commuter car now, since our family-friendly station wagon is a gas guzzler.

We ended up buying it because we wanted a four-door sedan with great gas mileage, good safety and reliability, and a reasonable price tag (we wanted to avoid financing and just pay cash). We haven't had a baby in it yet, but we have several friends with Civics who have 1-2 kids.

I bought my 2001 civic in 2004 and it is still going strong with 130k miles. It has needed a few repairs but has been reliable. I would get one if i were you. Ours is a 4 door. I wanted to addt that our car seat fits in the backseat with just a little limiting of the passenger seat. And our BOB folds and fits in the trunk no problem! Let me know if you have other questions. Good luck deciding!

I use to have a 2002 civic and it was great. I never had any mechanical issues with it and it got great gas mileage. My husband and I were just talking about it earlier today. I have an SUV now and wanted to get a bigger vehicle and pay it off before having kids. My only issue with the civic was that I got into so many fender bender accidents (I was always fine) that were not my fault. I'm not sure if it was a result of having a small car or just a random thing, but when I got rid of it I was on my fifth rear bumper and third front bumper.
