TBH none of the things my son has loved the most over the past year (20 months now) have been "big" toys; MIL has wanted to get him something big but we politely declined since we just did not have the space and also wanted him to have something he could enjoy right away. He has loved chunky puzzles, board books, card board blocks, green toys (fire truck, bus, wagon, and tea set), bubbles, crayons and side walk chalk, and a cheap toy lawn mower that he pushes around. On the slightly more expensive side, grandparents got him the fat brain toys spinning rings for his first Christmas - he wasn't really old enough for them until closer to 18 months but loves them now. We probably will bring up a toy kitchen if MIL asks again this year, but I don't think he would have been ready for it until at least 18 months....

How big is your yard? What about a swing set or climber?

My other suggestions - wagon, tricycle - have been thrown out there already.

Definitely agree with a push walker toy, a sit to stand toy, and a wagon.

My older daughter got this for christmas at 8 months and it has always been a favorite:

https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Around-Learning/dp/B01ASVCTIG/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=toddler+play+table&qid=1570479258&sr=8-9

And this she got for her first birthday, and it has been the single most played with toy in our house for 2.5 years now:

https://www.amazon.com/Little-Tikes-Hide-Seek-Climber/dp/B00B0DWCT8/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=kid+slide&qid=1570479202&sr=8-8

A child size chair - something like the pottery barn anywhere chair. DD got one just after turning one and she still sits in it at almost five.

She also got a play kitchen at one, we waited to build it until she was about 18 months though. And again at almost five she uses it daily.

A trike with the parent push handle that transitions to a regular trike. Or a wagon.

Magna tiles/Picasso tiles! They'll get used through elementary school but you need a bunch for it to be fun and they're pricy. Babies can play with them on a cookie sheet on the floor or standing at the fridge.

Walker, play kitchen, if you're in a cold region maybe start thinking about summer outdoor toys! And play gym/museum/zoo/aquarium memberships always great too!

@BadgerMom: just want to agree that my 14 MO LOVES her older brother's play kitchen and has since she could pull to stand. and her older brother still loves it at 3.5. solid early investment IMHO.

We had the regular V Tech sit to stand walker and it was so great for us that my mom and MIL subsequently got it for their homes and for their other grandkids.

Sled/saucer/tube (if you live somewhere snowy; my younger DD was about the same age as yours her first winter and joined in on the sledding fun)

Ball pit (honestly I hate this thing but our kids LOVE it—just be ready for balls everywhere)

Tent

Nugget (expensive but a lifesaver in the winter: kids climb, jump, make forts; https://nuggetcomfort.com/products/the-nugget)

Here are some ideas off the top of my head:
- push toy/walker
- wheely bug
- play kitchen (I know some ladies on hb who have raved about getting one this early)
- membership to the children's museum or little gym
- wagon

what about a sit to stand toy? At 9 mo he should just about be sitting in his own. We have the V Tech sit to stand train. My SIL bought it for us when my DS turned 1. I’ll admit, I was a bit appalled by its size and we have minimal electronic toys, but it’s proved to be a toy that’s lasted! DS is three & the train is still pulled out on occasion. And, the noise really doesn’t bother me. Blocks to encourage stacking are good. I’d think of toys he might enjoy between 9-12 months.

I have a 6 month old, so he'll be almost 9 months old at Christmas. My parents told me they want to get him a big gift, the problem is I can't think of anything! He already has the essentials, a crib, stroller, car seats and he has an ExerSaucer. I can't think of anything else!

Anything I'm not thinking of? I always struggle with asking for things for myself, and this is his first Christmas, so I'm allowing the grandparents to spoil him. I just honestly can't think of anything other than clothes!
