Do you get any prenatal care free? My prenatal care appointments were free with each baby (except for ultrasounds and lab work).

Don't forget that the baby will have his/her own medical bills for the hospital stay as well. Our baby was billed $3,440 but we only paid $300 of that after insurance.

For the birth, my insurance was billed $27,000 by the hospital and $2,500 by my OBGYN. I had an emergency C-section in November. Our OOP was $2,200.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will call the hospital next week to see what they say.

I was pregnant for 2 different years when I had my son 4 years ago. I had to pay my dr fees at 80% because I had not reached my deductible yet (I paid within the first 4 months of pregnancy). I paid the hospital bill after I had him.

@Mamaof2: same with me. Pregnancy and labor were over two years but OB charged at delivery and I only had to pay for that year.

@catomd00: @Mamaof2: my "prenatal care" was just one copay, I think at the end? But I still got bills for ultrasounds and blood work that was separate from the prenatal care bill. So with my first we had to meet the deductible twice since it was two calendar years. My December baby was cheaper in regards to everything being in one year but I had the same thing where it was one copay for prenatal but had to meet he deductible for the extras.

I'm not sure. Ours was a surprise, but they bill is beforehand and we have to pay by 32 weeks. I already met my deductible last time so it was pretty low, but I haven't this time and I'm sure it will be much higher.

When we had our daughter we had to pay our family OOP of $7K before insurance really kicked in. Somehow they were able to assign expenses to me and also expenses to our newborn, making it so that we had to meet our family OOP as opposed to individual OOP. Something to keep in mind in case this applies to you too!

@Mamaof2: @catomd00: I switched from a two-doctor practice to a very large Obgyn group mid-pregnancy. And my first OB would bill me for each check-up while for the second I had a single copay upfront and then a larger bill after delivery that included delivery and prenatal visits. So it may vary with insurance and each practice? Anyways I ended up hating my first doctor because of their billing practices.

@Mamaof2: really?! My OB didn't bill at all either until the end, but I still was responsible for two deductibles because the services were rendered in both plan years. They didn't care about when it was billed. I delivered 2 weeks after the new plan year started and they had no mercy on me!

I tried to save the family OOP but didn't quite make it. I'd shoot for that but if it's too much then aim for between the individual OOP and the family OOP. I ended up with lots of prenatal costs that I didn't account for and so that set me back.

@youboots: @FancyGem: that may not be true -check with your OB - mine doesn't bill at all during the pregnancy - once you deliver they bill you all at once that way its covered the same year you give birth and helps with OOP costs

I called my hospital to find out how much a vaginal birth/c-section, epidural and 2-5 night stay was. I also called my OB's office to figure out the prenatal care cost. From there, my insurance was able to give me a number.

I only had to pay my deductible (twice because each birth rolled over to a new year).

You'll probably hit your OOP Max since you don't have 100% coverage after your deductible is met. If you're on a family plan, you'll need to look at the family Max, not just the individual max. That's how much I'd save, and then some if you can for any unexpected expenses.

@FancyGem: then save $4000. Keep in mind that you may have significant prenatal costs if the pregnancy is not in the same calander year as the pregnancy. Unless you are shooting for a Aug, Sept, Oct or Nov baby you may want to save more- like 6-7k total.

Hi,
I my husband and I are considering having another baby. It has been over 4 years since I gave birth and it was in another state. (I'm not sure if cost varies for state to state) We want to stash some of hubby's bonus away to save medical expenses before we ttc. We have no idea how much we need to save. I know we need as to save as much as we can, but we like to set concrete goals. We were overwhelmed with medical bills after having our first child. We would like to prevent it from happening again. I can't remember how much we spent 4 years ago. lol Plus, I delivered in a private hospital, which would not be the case now. We currently live in Texas (if that helps).

ETA: Our deductible is $2,600 and individual max out of pocket is $4,000. The insurance pays 80% once we reach our deductible. We pay 80% before we reach it.
