No LO yet - when we bought our house we weren't even planning to have kids, ever. But we decided to buy within walking distance of a very good public school, just in case. After discussing our own experiences, we're looking more seriously at Catholic or other private schools or even paying tuition for public school in a different district. We'd like our child to be exposed to more diversity, more academic opportunities, and more progressive attitudes than what we think they'd get from the local public school. The kids in the school strike us as very homogenous and bored, not a recipe for success.

LO isn't here yet, but we have already made the decision hopefully in about 5-10 years; for sure before any of our LO(s) are in middle school~!

My friend just posted on facebook about a school she's sending her son too, it's a school for the arts and it looks amazing. But we live right down the street from a very good school, which is part of why we bought this house. But LO is only one so we've decided not to worry about it until she gets older... things can change by then anyway.

Thanks Ladies. We did buy our house based on our school- so it is a good school. The other school is well out of our price range, but significantly better- you can't test in- you just have to see if there is room that year. I just wonder if it is better to put her into a competitive situation where she'd do ok. Or an ok situation where she could thrive. I guess I will just have to wait and see where she falls on the spectrum.

I dont have a LO yet, but schools was definitely at the top of the list when we were looking at where to buy, we picked an area where the public school ranks top 5% of the state. I just recently learned about Montessori and find it very interesting and love the idea of it, however, I feel that if I were to start with a Montessori school, it would have to continue through highschool and not just for preschool. But given that they are 18-20k a year around here, I just dont think it's feasible. Maybe if we had spent a little less on the house to live in this town for the schools, we may have been able to consider and afford it.

We moved into a neighborhood with an amazing elementary school. It is the most desirable in my community and I've heard it has a good Spanish program. However we don't know if we are going to homeschool or send them to that school. Oh, and my kids haven't been conceived yet.

We would really prefer the kids go to a high-performing private Cathoilic school, but we we have to relocate in order for that to happen. So, at the moment, school is on the back burner for us until we move to a new area.

A good school district was definitely high on our list when we were searching for houses as well. Both my DH and I went to public school and enjoyed a lot of the opportunities it brought, so we knew that we wanted to send our kids to public school as well.

Yup. We're either moving when she gets to school age or sending her to private school. End of story unless a good school happens to open up in our area.

I def think about this. Good school district was high on our list when house searching. We want our LO in a public or charter school if the district school is not good. But thankfully our school district is pretty good.

If she can test into that other competitive school then I definitely would.

I don't necessarily think preschool shapes your child's education. But if you were thinking of sending her to a specific style elementary school going to a similar preschool will definitely help ease her into it.

The post on NurtureShock: Kindergarten got the Husband and I thinking about schools for our little lady (even though she isn't even 1).

First, our day care feeds a lot of kids into the Waldorf Pre-School and then the Waldorf elementary. I know I don't want our lady to go to a Waldorf elementary, and I am pretty sure that I want her to go to the Montessori Preschool. Do you think a preschool environment shapes your child's education?

Second, we live within walking distance to a pretty good elementary school. YET there is one elementary school that has AMAZING test scores (one could call it a competitive school). My husband wants to see if we can get our lady into it. He thinks- why wouldn't we send her to the very best school we can?

I know this is so premature, but I can't help but think that it all seems extreme- Waldorf vs a traditional highly competitive school. I am just shocked that my sweet, good natured husband is kind of a Tiger Dad.

Has anyone else started to feel the schooling pressure??
