Now that I have two, I would 10000% take my toddler away by myself, it would be so easy, haha!

I would like to pick a place with beach, pool and maybe kid friendly things close by and I wouldn't make it a super long trip since it is tiring one way or another.

I did a trip with my newly turned 4 year old last summer. We had planned to take a vacation that week but when we went to book it (well, I should say re-book it - we had to cancel a previously planned vacation due to Zika) my husband had a work thing come up and wanted to cancel. I was 8 months pregnant and knew it was my last shot at a vacation for awhile so my husband joined for 2 days but DS and I stayed for about a week. Our trip actually involved a 4.5 hour plane ride, hotel, and rental car. We had a great time. I got lots of sleep since we were sharing a hotel room. I would definitely do it again.

I would probably not feel comfortable taking my 22 mo to the beach solo, but he is kind of a wild guy. I could do it, but it would be pretty stressful for me. That might change as he gets older!

It's funny, I just got back from the cape with my kids (we've done 3 trips there in the past 3 years) and I personally wouldn't do it solo, but it sounds great for you. I'm a weirdo who doesn't really like beaches, and I also dislike that you have to drive everywhere on the cape. We still go because we live really close by and I grew up going every summer. If I still only had 1 kid, I'd definitely consider a solo vacation though. What you describe sounds lovely, especially if you are a beach lover.

I've done the beach the last 2 summers without my DH. Just LO and I. He was like 10-12 months and 22-24 months. We had a place that had all the criteria you mentioned for the entire summer and I went out there ton by ourselves for up to a week at a time. It was awesome and no big deal at all.
Solo parenting is hard but something about doing it at the beach makes it way easier. They are entertained (mine can play in sand for hours) and happy and sleep well after a day on the beach. We did lots of special things like ice cream walks and the boardwalk.
At night I drank wine on the balcony listening to the ocean. 👍🏼
Do it!

@Adira: Probably the only place I'd ever feel up to taking two little kids to the beach myself is on the cape side beaches at low tide when the water is like an inch deep for a mile out.

Oh and there's an awesome playground in Chatham and the best lobster rolls on the cape are in Dennis, at Sesuit Harbor Cafe.

Let me know if you have any questions. I've been doing this trip with DS every summer since he was born. This'll be our fourth one with him.

I think it sounds fine. Just make sure to stick to beaches on the bay. Those beaches are awesome and reasonably safe, especially around low tide. We go every year, I'm excited for our trip at the end of this month. We always get a rental because usually my parents and my brother and his wife go too. A motel might be a little trickier unless you're ok eating out pretty much every meal.

Do it! You'll have so much fun. I agree with others - I'd pick an airbnb with 2 bedrooms over a hotel any day. Having a kitchen and a bit more room is priceless.

Check the photos of a rental carefully and keep LO in mind. Make sure the rooms/layout works well for you. We rented a beach house with stairs when LO was 18 months. The stairs weren't baby proofed and I spent a ton of time watching LO like a hawk which wasn't super relaxing.

Also biased since I'm a mom of three, but a trip like that with any one of my children sounds awesome! One to one on the beach really isn't bad at all - just do it in small doses, as others suggested. I'm actually considering a getaway with just the baby this summer if I can fit it into the schedule. Do it! :)

New mom of two - and I would looooove to have a getaway like that with my oldest! Especially if he were two again. I would have felt trepidatious at the time - but in hind sight I realize it would be totally do-able. Go for it! And accept there will be some stressful moments, but the good ones will outweigh it And this - picture it through your LO's eyes:

@Oliviapope: I think you don't need a pool if you can walk to the beach! Also- if she doesn't have her own room will she nap well? Eat well in the hotel restaurant? Allow you some space to relax? I know my kid wouldn't- I choose suites or air bnb any time

@Oliviapope: I think it sounds lovely! I think I'd rather the space of a rental, ideally a short walk to the beach. I agree to have some quiet activities for non beach time, coloring, stickers, or I just bought this little felt busy book type thing in target dollar bins that is great for travel. I'd plan to eat two meals in the room or picnic and one out.

Especially if you are thinking of having another kid one day, this would be a really special trip! (This comes from someone really struggling to do anything with my two kids these days 😂)

@youboots: Nope, driving. About 3-4 hrs, depending on traffic. But another good point to consider . . .

@matador84:  @Littlebit7:  @Mrs. Champagne:  @caterw:  thanks for the feedback!

Another question I'm struggling with - getting a rental would allow for more space, her own sleeping area (important!), more space to spread out, no shared walls (and no noisy neighbors, or fear of being the noisy neighbor).

But a hotel/motel room would be comparable in price, and would have a pool. Now, a pool with my 2 yr old is pretty stressful, so I don't think we need one. But am I missing something here?

Thanks for putting up with my overthinking, and for all of your input.

I think if you can find a place that meets your criteria, this could be absolutely lovely! Just keep your expectations low and your plan simple. I would just follow her lead and try to build in some quiet activities each day (maybe a special new coloring book and stickers?) so you don't go nuts trying to chase her on the beach all day.

I really want to get to the beach this summer and DH's job is going to prevent him from being able to go. He is very encouraging that if I'd like to go with LO, I should do it. But we both wonder if it's kind of crazy for me to do it on my own. (You moms of more than one kid are probably laughing at me now :silly: )

My plan would be to get a little rental in Dennis port - spend early mornings and late afternoons on the beach with LO, go back to the rental to make lunch and for nap. Maybe take a couple of days to visit other parts of the Cape, play grounds, etc.

I want to stay somewhere that has a separate bedroom for LO, an outside space so I can read while she sleeps, and is walking distance to the beach/a place to eat. I've found a couple of options that meet this criteria.

Is there anything else I should be thinking of? Am I crazy? Also, any tips for keeping a 2 y/o occupied on vacation so I'm not totally exhausted?

Thanks for any advice!
