My mom, grandmother, and aunts smoke. When I have a LO I won't allow them to hold him/her after smoking without washing their hands. None of them smoke inside. My mom smokes in the garage and my grandmother and aunts smoke on the porch. I'm not going to let my LO be around them while smoking. I hated breathing the second hand smoke as a child. It was a battle to get my mom to stop smoking in the car.

My in-laws are heavy smokers, also. My husband and I were both aware of the thirdhand smoke research and so he approached the subject with them before LO was born. He told them that they would not be able to smoke at all on the days that they see LO. So far, this hasn't been too hard, as they have only seen him twice (live in a different city), but I don't know how we will be able to sustain this policy. My son's health is very important to me, though, and my husband had allergies and asthma as a child that he thinks were due to the smoke in the house.

I am interested in @MrsJacks no smoking policy too. What are the details?

@Mrs. Jacks: I would also love more details on the no smoke policy? No one could smoke even outside at your house? No one who was a smoker could ever hold the babies? Thanks!

What an awkward situation to be in. Would it help to show them research about how it can harm the baby?

@mrsjacks the no smoke policy...what exactly was it? if they smoked they couldn't hold the child? I am with you. It is going to be a tough battle to fight with the in-laws and DH--but I don't care!

I'm going to have to figure this one out, because my dad's wife smokes and she often takes smoke breaks 2-3 times while over at our place for dinner. FIL smokes cigars, but I'm hoping he won't do that before handling the baby...

My in-laws all smoke (MIL, BIL, and FIL) but they never smell like smoke to me and never smoke inside their house or in their cars, so I'm not really concerned about smoke exposure with them.

We have lots of smokers in our family (but none that visit regularly). Only one smells like smoke all the time, which is my MIL. She is coming to stay with us to visit with the baby and we plan on asking her to 1) wash her hands after smoking/before touching baby 2) wear something, like a robe or big shirt while she is smoking and then taking that off when she holds the baby.

@Thehistoryofus: I like the t-shirt idea, too.

We instituted a no smoke policy. It ended one of my friendships and has strained another relationship, but my babies' health is a non-negotiable.

Luckily no immediate family smokes, my best friend does and I have already told her she can't smell like smoke when coming to the hospital. Sometimes it's really bad, and her husband is even worse. They don't think it's a big deal since they have a one year old "and she's fine" but I just don't like it!

@lydg: Another approach someone mentioned one time was keeping extra large t-shirts on hand and asking guests to put the tshirt on before holding the baby.

I have concerns about this and really think third hand smoke is a danger. However, I do ask that they wash their hands after smoking before touching the baby. I don't ask that they hold her in a blanket but I wish I could.

If my IL's smoked in the car or in the house I would not allow LO over there.

My In Laws smoke as well. I will insist that they wash their hands and also that they place a blanket between their clothes and the baby any time they hold the baby. I really don't care if that's annoying to them. The health of my baby is more important to me than their convenience. And if it's such a big deal, then they can stop holding the baby, or stop smoking.

Yeah, that is why I'm concerned. We see them a lot (they live here in town) and I know they will be up at the hospital. I would have them wash their hands like any other guest, but the smell is just so strong whenever I am around them. Plus they smoke in the house, the car, pretty much everywhere.

My MIL is a heavy smoker. The first time she was going to meet our LO, I asked her not to smoke at all that day. I did not want to expose a newborn to any kind of cigarette smoke. LO is 6 months now and I've relaxed a bit. I do always make her wash her hands before holding the baby. But we also don't see her very often - maybe every three months or so, and only for short visits. If we saw her all the time, I'd probably be more concerned about it

Have you heard of this? I was eating dinner with a friend who is a registered dietician and she was telling me how she is required now to tell her patients about the dangers of thirdhand smoke.

My in-laws are all heavy chain smokers and I already had been worried about the baby being around them since the smoke is on their clothes, etc. My husband's take on it is he grew up around all the smoke and he is fine (of course he dips and it drives me completely up the wall). She asked me if I would let them hold the baby while they were smoking, and obviously I said no, and she said the research done on thirdhand smoke shows the same effects.

How would you fight this battle? I am already trying to think of what to say to them in the hospital...them holding the baby makes me extremely uncomfortable.
