The way your cycle works is that you ovulate and then about 2 weeks late you get your period. So, when you're breastfeeding, you will ovulate and then around 2 weeks later have your first post partum period. If you have sex around ovulation that first time it is possible to get pregnant.

I read somewhere that 5% of women ovulate before their period comes back. I got pregnant at 8 months postpartum without getting my period back. I was able to continue nursing.

My understanding has always been what @Mrs. Champagne said- it's possible but only the month you would have gotten your period back.

@schubr03: I use Creighton nfp, and the signs of ovulation were the same before my first PP period as they would be for any other ovulation. I didn't have anything going on for 12 months, and then I had the EWM cervical mucus that's indicative of ovulation and my first period arrived about two weeks later at 13 months PP.

I think it would just be the month you would be about to get your period, if you manage to catch that egg? I'm not sure though! I did get what I bought was a positive OPK when my son was 9 months old and I didn't get my period until 11 months pp.

...generally yes. But I swear some members have shared that they've gotten their pregnant while breastfeeding with no sign of periods yet. Or maybe I was hallucinating?? ;)

Your period generally comes about two wks after ovulation, so yes, you can get pregnant before your period comes back.

In order to get pregnant while breastfeeding, you need to have gotten your period, right? I'm not ovulating if I haven't gotten my period, am I right?
