@T.H.O.U.: I tried that this morning and she said, "my friends aren't scared, they liked it." Ugh. I told her to say bad guys but she can ask me anything about them at home. I e-mailed the parents and they were both great about it.

I had a situation with my son involving gun play, and I basically told him that doing that would possibly upset some people and he might get reprimanded for it if he did it in a public place. It worked better than telling him not to do/say something, because that just made it more of a thing for him to defy me on. YMMV though.

We've had a somewhat similar situation with the word "Nazi", and since we live in Austria, it's really not something to joke about and not a word I want my son shouting at the playground. I agree with the others about telling her it's scary and may upset other children, so she should say "bad guys" or "monsters" or something more neutral around her friends. That being said, I would reassure her that she can talk about it and her fears at home with you.

Could you maybe switch approaches and not tell her not to talk about it but maybe explain why it's not something to joke/play around about? Maybe explain that it could really scare her friends and if they want to pretend bad guys or monsters that's ok but don't bring up them specifically?

@OldpuebloJenn: Thanks! I guess this comes with the territory -- if wasn't the KKK, it'd be vaginas.

@winter_wonder: Good idea. She told me the names of the kids she mentioned it to so I think I will just shoot them both an e-mail just in case. School/camp ends on Friday! This had to happen now?!

@JoyfulKiwi: Well, good to hear that this is age appropriate. I guess this is how she's processing it. I have been telling her that she can say things at home but not in school, and she's been good about it, but she probably needs to have that message reinforced a bit more.

Well, it's actually good/developmental appropriate go her to bring it up in play. It's a great processing tool! But, I can see how other parents may be uncomfortable with that. I'd say to let the teacher know and then take the casual stance of "That's okay at home, but we don't play KKK at school." Hopefully she'll feel comfortable still talking about it at home & other families won't give you grief. (This is how I deal with "bad" words with my preschoolers and it seems to work well.)

I might mention something to her teacher about it (so they aren't shocked if your DD brings it up). If you know the parents well I would just mention what you said above about her being curious. If you don't know them well I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Could you tell your DD that talking about the kkk might make some people uncomfortable and it's best not to mention it?

Ahhh so hard...no idea if this is remotely helpful.

I'd address it with the teacher tomorrow, explaining why your child knows of the KKK. I'd want the teacher and any parents that mention it to the teacher to know why within context my child was talking about the kkk.
My 4yo explained the basics of child birth and nursing to her whole class, one parent was upset that their child now knows the word vagina, but everyone else didn't mind- understanding the context.

So, let's say your child was playing with a couple of her friends at school and she introduced them to the KKK (ugh, long story short she heard us talking about them and I tried to explain it in a basic way and she's been fascinated/nervous/scared ever since). Anyway, they were playing a game and she told them, "Run! The KKKs are coming to get us!" and "Let's hide the Legos, the KKKs don't like them."

I have been telling her not to say KKK -- so she usually says the bad people. I also told her not to talk about it at school, but I guess they are like monsters (well, they ARE monsters) to her.

Ummmmmm. WTF do I do now?

*she told me about this, not the teachers or other parents
