@mrbee: You can't always tell though. I worked at a homeless shelter for years and saw lots of families you wouldn't suspect!

It wouldn't bother me, but then again I live in Montana and not NYC.

It's supposedly not unusual to see unattended strollers (prams) outside with a sleeping baby in it, while the parents are inside a cafe drinking coffee in Sweden! Crazy, right? There's always a few stories popping up about Swedes getting in trouble for doing this while overseas:

http://www.thelocal.se/35592/20110817/

I don't live in a large city and don't frequent Stockholm enough to see how often it's done there but people comment on how my backyard deck is PERFECT for winter when the baby can nap outside while we "fika" (have coffee) inside ...

and in my old apartment, I walked down the stairway to find an unattended, sleeping baby in the hallway in the dead of winter! The door was closed and everything. The ppl living there were supposed to run a babysitting service too! O_O;

I would freak the %*$@# out if my so ever did that with our baby. Thankfully, I know he wouldn't but aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!! I don't know what I would do if I saw someone sleeping and their baby sleeping next to them. Wake them up? Gah.

People steal babies all the time, so falling asleep while you are outside your home is not ok. The adult should be awake to watch the baby, even if the baby is asleep

tired or not...go home and take a nap! if I was remotely sleep-deprived/tired enough, I wouldn't head to the park..I'd be parked on the couch at home. unless he's narcoleptic, you have *some* warning that you're getting tired. sleeping on a park bench is *not* responsible parenting. especially with all the crazies out there today!!

Omg. I would most definitely do what @mrs. bird: said, and take the baby (my own) so DH could wake up terrified & learn his lesson. If I actually saw this, I would tap on the man's shoulder until he woke up and tell him CPS has been called. I wouldn't actually call CPS but I'd want to scare him a little.

@bluestriped bee: Never seen the guy before! There were a lot of people in the park though, and I'm guessing a bunch of them were watching the situation with concern.

I have a policy of non-interference unless someone is in active danger, and given all the people giving the guy side-eye, I figured the baby was ok.

I'm childless and I'm sure I would be angry if I found out SO fell asleep at the park BUT...

I actually feel bad for the man. I've read so many threads here on HB (and from momma friends) about how exhausted you mommas and daddies are.

I would probably do something like drop my bag in front of him to get him to wake up. Or do something with a loud noise. I'm sure, he didn't mean to fall asleep.

I'm a passive person so I wouldn't actively touch him but I would do something indirectly to wake him up. Maybe get my phone timer to go off or something.

I, also, think that he will probably feel like crap when he wakes up and realizes that he had fallen asleep.

Also, if I get him to wake up, maybe he'll realize that he messed up and should probably head home or grab a very strong coffee.

@mrbee: Or is this man a regular? Have you seen him more than one time at the park asleep?

Oh I would be one unhappy mama.

I'm usually not one to get involved with other people's parenting choices. But I actually would have seen that as a huge risk to the child's safety. I also would have given the guy the benefit of the doubt that he feel asleep by accident. So I actually think I would have woken him up and pointed out to him that his child was essentially unsupervised in a public park.

Speaking as a childless person, so maybe the reality of it would be different, but right now, I think I'd take the baby quietly & leave him there. I mean if I saw DH sleeping on a bench next to our LO, I wouldn't take someone else's baby! But I think the panic that would ensure would be enough to keep it from EVER being a problem again. And I would probably wouldn't speak to him for at least a week, and it'd be years before he left the house alone with LO!

It would have been really easy to steal his baby, since they were both passed out. In the end, we decided not to do it.

I was slightly horrified at the level of irresponsibility involved there. Although it was kind of adorable too, since they were both sleeping with their mouths open.
