I got ribbons for participating in my school's field day, I am almost 40, so I don't think it's a new or terrible thing. I didn't think I was some super athlete, by the way, it was just a commemoration for participating.

At the end of the day, I don't think it's so much the act of giving ribbons that is cause for concern, I think it has more to do with the parents and their interpretation and reaction. Is it heartbreaking when you see your child upset? Absolutely. I take the responsibility to discuss the outcome with my child.

I agree with most of the article, I work with interns and many of them come in with a "I know best & am always right" attitude that has to be shot down very quickly. I'm 28 (for one more day I can say this) & I did not grow up in the everyone wins, ect. world. But my sister 4 years later did, she started getting ribbons/trophies just for participating in activities.

And honestly I can tell a difference in how we act in a professional setting and just in life in general. I'm okay with rejection, she is not. Some of that may be that she's the youngest and was more babied, but I think some happened with the "shift" in the way things worked. My mom even know recognizes it and has mentioned it. My sister is married with 2 kids, but is way more dependent on my mom to help solve her problems, whereas myself and my older sister just do it on our own.

That title doesn't go with the article at all. I totally agree. Kids think they are entitled to everything these days. I mean trophies for everything, come on! Kids needs to learn how to lose just as learn how to win.

I think the title that OddCrunch gave it is very misleading. She's not giving up on her kids at all. She's empowering them to think for themselves and learn how the world really works. I like the blogger's title better: "Why My Kids Are Not The Center Of My World".

But I definitely agree with her! Even some of the young people I work with today seem soooooo entitled and can't seem to handle it with an idea of theirs is rejected. I definitely don't want to raise my children to be like that! I want them to know the world doesn't revolve around them and that they have to work hard to find their place in it.
