@erwoo: he's just ten weeks old, and I definitely look for his sleep cues. He is pretty consistent about getting sleepy about an hour and half after he last woke up...the problem is that he fights going down SO much. He'll fall asleep in my arms and then when I put him down he either wakes immediately and won't settle back to sleep or I'll get about 15 minutes out of him. I've tried just letting him sleep in my arms but he will wake after about 15 minutes there as well :(
@loveisstrange: this gives me hope that being a bad napper doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a bad nighttime sleeper forever!
@mrsbee: I'm counting down the days until he is old enough to sleep train! I feel bad wishing time away, but I'm just so tired!
@adira; @lulu mom: @char54: so so jealous! <3

C has always been a great sleeper , STTN since 4 weeks and now at 10 weeks does 10-12 hours.

I keep waiting for her to regress but my mom says all 4 of us STTN early on. Also I think the fact C is bottle fed is a factor to her sleeping...definitely worth all those pumping sessions! Lol

I've heard from several friends that their babies who didn't sleep at all magically started STTN around 6 months so there's definitely hope!

My LO has always been a phenominal sleeper. I used to have to wake her up to eat the first weeks, and then after we got hte okay to let her sleep she would sleep 5+ hours starting at 5 weeks, and was sleeping 8-9 hours by 12 weeks. She's 14 months & we have never had issues with nighttime wakes unless she's teething/sick. We are spoiled for sure.

my LO was a GREAT sleeper until 4 months. Then he was a bad sleeper til we Sleep trained at 6.5 months. And then he became a bad sleeper again at around 9 months, and at 13 months I would say he's a pretty good napper, but not so great at night.

Mine has always been a bad napper but was a good night sleeper at first. That all changed around 7-8 months. I would call him a challenging sleeper now - he STTN probably 80% of the time. But there are nights he's up in the middle of the night for 2 hours. My point is it can all change in an instant!

DS was a terrible sleeper until 9 mos when he started walking and STTN at the same time. He's always been a good napper though, and consistently sleeps 1.5-2.5 hrs every day. He only sleeps 10 hrs at night though.

DS has always been a great sleeper. He's never argued about bedtime and can go right to sleep...he's been that way since about 4 months. My mom says I was the same way, though.

I'm hoping the next LO will be as easy. I have a feeling DS has spoiled me.

DS was a HORRIBLE sleeper at first. Between having days and nights mixed up, to waking up to feed every 1-3 hours. I noticed that when he didn't nap good during the day he would sleep like crap at night so now I try and get him down for a nap every two hours as that's his max awake time. I also put him down drowsy, but awake and as long as he's not hungry he falls asleep on his own and is sleeping through the night (8p-6am) pretty consistently at three months old. Now that I put this in writing I feel like I'm jinxing myself lol. Just waiting for the 4 month sleep regression to kick in haha....

I think some kids ARE naturally better sleepers than others.

Both of mine have always been good night time sleepers, but not the best nappers. Even as newborns, they never woke up more than 2x to eat so I think that's pretty good. They would eat and go right back to sleep while eventually dropping all feeds on their own. So I've been lucky and I can't complain. But maybe it has something to do with the fact that I started consistent routines with both of them very early on?

Mine was always a good sleeper at night. She would settle quickly and was sleeping 7-8 hour stretches by 2 weeks old, in her own crib in her own room. Night feedings were quick and she would go right back to sleep. She night weaned at 6 months.

However, she's always been a bad napper. We had to nap train her early on and use CIO. Even at 19 months, naps are still a struggle sometimes.

Honestly, what we did was implement a strict schedule and routine. She never had clear sleep cues and would end up overtired, so we set her bedtime early on and established a routine. We also made sure we were helping her distinguish night and day pretty much from birth.

@MamaMagpie: @seattlemama: The first year definitely wasn't easy and I was a zombie. Sleep deprivation is no joke! At some point I decided to stop fighting it and just roll with it and I think that helped improve my outlook. Best of luck to both of you!

My baby started dabbling in STTN at 6 weeks and was consistent by 8 weeks. She was a good napper until she started daycare in Sept and now it is hit or miss.

I hate saying this to a newer mom, but our first year had many, many ups and downs. He really started sleeping longer around 6 months, then we had a rough stretch at 10 months, but once he started walking ~15ish months he really got to be a good sleeper at night at least. Naps can be hit or miss depending on the day, but I swear being able to wear himself out was key for us.

Oh, and we did A LOT of rocking for naps and bed time the first 3-4 months of both of our boys' life. It was rough... but now it's a blur how rough it was.. Okay, just a little blur. :D And we used white noise makers (a fan turned away from the crib) as well. I actually got an actual white noise machine for my youngest b/c I used to be worried that his older brother would wake him. It helped and we don't use it anymore. Haven't for a long time.

Do you look for his sleepy cues? How old is he? Infants have a limit of 1-2/2.5 hours of awake time depending on their age. Once they hit that mark or even shortly before you can start his nap/bed time routine. Babies and toddlers are so routine driven. Whenever I tell my youngest (20 months) that it's nap/bed time and I am ready to make his bottle he comes running for it and then carries it into his bedroom b/c that's our routine. If I change it one bit he would complain.

I've been lucky that both of my boys have been great sleepers (thanks to sleep training as well). My youngest does wake up at night from time-to-time b/c he cries from teething pain but settles down really fast by himself and goes back to sleep.

Babies will have sleep regression months but just keep at your routine and be mindful of the time and it should get easier. I've paid dearly for messing with my youngest's schedule, especially as an infant. He is better now though. All babies are different but this is what worked for me.

Hope you can find some relief soon!

@MamaMagpie: yeah dd still had the witching hour and fits and meltdowns if we missed tired signals til about 4 months but her nights got better. Sttn meaning 7-9 hrs and we replaced pacis once or twice or so and still called it sttn but by the time I really remember doing that she was 4 months. I gues what I'm saying is it wasn't perfect (still hoping sttn sticks) but I can't complain. :) just know that it will happen and when it does the sleepless nights become sort of a blurry memory. :)

@LAMARINIERE: I am so glad to hear your story. My 10 month old has never been a good sleeper - naps or nighttime. We have tried various forms of sleep training, and they each only seemed to make him angry at the idea of rest/sleep for a few weeks! Maybe he'll turn out like your son. :)

My DS has been a pretty good sleeper except for the 4 month sleep regression. Whenever he is more difficult to get to sleep it's because he is overtired. I start our nap routine (close blinds, sleep sheep on, cuddle with soother) pretty much the first time he shows signs of being tired (rubbing eyes or yawning) and it really helped.

My DS was the WORST sleeper for the entire first year of his life, 2-4 night wakings and terrible napper until after 12 months. Then, one night, he decided he was going to STTN and has been a champion sleeper ever since for both naps and night and he is almost 3. I don't think anything we did helped.. We tried sleep training 3 times during the first year and he wasn't interested at all. He just did it when he was ready.

I would say my LO has always been a good sleeper, but that doesn't mean we didn't have nights that were bad. The worst was around 4 months. We never implemented a strict routine as far as times. We tried to follow his cues. If he was definitely tired Nd wouldn't go down, we resorted to walks in the stroller. We probably did that all the time for awhile, but we didn't do it if it wasn't necessary. And eventually, he just started going down more easily. Naps are still trickier from time to time, but overall we are lucky, lucky. (Almost no motn waking a ever).

...where your LOs always that way? Obviously all babies wake during the night for awhile, but I'm interested in knowing that if your older baby now is a "good" sleeper, do you feel like they were pretty much always "easy"? Did it magically happen one day? Did you do certain things to help them learn to sleep?

DS is still so brand new, but is incredibly hard to get down...we're talking many many settles (usually about 2 hours) until he is finally down for a maximum of a three-hour block. His two MOTN wakings don't take quite as long but are still a struggle. And while he napped once a day (morning) for the first time all week last week, this week they have disappeared. I give him every opportunity to sleep...I even tried for three hours one day to get him to nap before finally giving up. I just feel so bad for him because I can tell he's so tired and I know his little brain and body need the sleep!
