I grocery shop on Saturday afternoon. I create a menu each week, then make a list for items we need for those meals but don't have. We freeze a lot of meat (bought in bulk when on sale).

We make a detailed meal plan, eat more perishable foods early in the week, and use frozen meat most of the time. I haaaaaate grocery shopping so being able to keep it to once a week is a godsend.

I buy very little, honestly, because the only meals we have to take care of are dinner during the week, all meals on the weekends and all meals/snacks for LO during the week. I meal plan as much as possible and I am not ashamed to rely on frozen fruit and veggies in a pinch. I also freeze half gallons of milk.

If we were having all three meals at home, it is a different story. When that was the case, I was at the market every other day, largely because I had the time and the market was on our daily walking route.

I go to the grocery store several times a week sometimes because I go to different stores for different things. My goal is to stick to one time a week too because it's easier and I think I spend less when I don't go as much. I hear you about the frozen meat. I really only put meat in the freezer that I'm going to make soup with. I do take apart whole chickens and freeze them, but I can tell the difference as well. I try to buy just enough meat for 2 meals per week because those two meals will make for 4 meals for the week. I shop on mondays so I make meals with the meat earlier in the week. Towards the end of the week, I'll go to the store for fish/seafood (I like those fresh - from the store at least). We go out for dinners on weekends so that cuts down on the shopping we need to do.

I try for once a week. I think freezing chicken and ground turkey helps. I thaw it in the fridge for 36 hours. I use fish first so no need to freeze it. Fresh veggies usually last the week if I use them in the right order and there is always a frozen back up if needs be. I buy a bunch of different fruit - it helps that the pears/plums/avocados aren't usually ready to eat until closer to the end of the week. I usually shop Tuesday afternoon.

There is absolutely no way I could only go to the grocery store once a week. We eat a ton of fresh produce and it goes bad after 2-3 days depending on what it is. I'm fine with freezing meat and I know you can stock up on other things like canned goods, pasta, rice, etc. but we need to buy fresh produce every 2-3 days and sometimes I'm not able to menu plan in advance so I only buy dinner ingredients for 1-2 nights at a time.

@Andrea: ugh i know. recently i ordered cornish game hens which i use to make chicken porridge and they didn't have any. so it's just easier not to use fresh direct. when i need to buy a lot i just have them deliver since it's free (except for the tip).

@Mrs. Bee: yes, I just recently bought frozen salmon from TJ's, thinking that it would save me a trip to the fish market. YUCK. i can't eat frozen stuff. i threw it all out. what a waste. although i think it matters less for something like chicken.

i think reducing to 2x a week would help! i don't like to order from freshdirect either. it's also a pain when they do not have something in stock, which happens frequently. sometimes you don't know until they make the delivery and then what? you go to the store anyway!

@Andrea: the kids don't eat food that's been frozen as well unless it's soup. i can tell the difference in taste when food has been frozen, maybe unless it's in a sauce/soup/crockpot.

i could see us reducing to 2x a week, but not any less than that. it's more of a pain for me to order from freshdirect than pop into the local grocery store, because when i order from fresh direct, i always forget something and end up going to the store anyway!

also since mr bee and i work from home, we eat every single meal at home so maybe we go through more food?

@mediagirl: We're actually beta testing a new version of it right now that creates meal plans for you based on your grocery store's weekly sale ads. I like it. There's still some kinks to work out, but otherwise it's super convenient and the recipes have been easy and tasty.

Maybe you can get the non-meat and produce stuff via delivery. Then you'll have less to carry home from the market. I'm totally with you on the frozen stuff. I don't find things appetizing once they've been frozen and defrosted so I have to buy everything fresh as well. I've been more organized lately so I can get away with doing one large grocery run on Sundays. I might run in and pick up a few small things throughout the week, though.

I shop once a week. But I have a car so carrying stuff isn't an issue. I freeze meat if needed, and I use up the more perishable produce first. Like I'll save sweet potatoes for the end of the week, since those don't go bad so quickly.

I shop on Sundays. I plan for Sun-Friday. So we might have to run out on Sat for that dinner. I try and cook the real perishable items the beginning of the week. But I will buy say chicken on Sunday, freeze it, and then take out Wed and cook on Thursday. I don't know notice the difference of it being frozen.

We go once a week and I meal plan, so I know exactly what I need and get enough. I make sure my fruits/veggies are ripe and that they will last close to a week! I shop on Sunday's and we are usually on the go on the weekends so if we runout of fresh produce it's not as big of a deal.

I usually food shop on Fridays. I make a list for the week first of meals I want to do, and then see what ingredients I already have and what need to be purchased. I write those down first.

Then I write down all the weekly things we always buy - milk, chicken, yogurt, stuff for DH's lunch, etc.

Then I'll browse the sale paper for our store and jot down anything that's a great deal to stock up - or if I have something written down that's on sale, I'll put a star.

If I have time, I'll also browse the internet for coupons - I'll do coupons.com, coupons.target.com, and search "kellogg's fiber bar coupon" or something similar.

I also buy tons of frozen veggies..I read somewhere they are similarly nutritious to fresh, and less processed cause they don't have to care about what they look like/presentation.

shoot - I had more, baby just woke screaming. be back later!

We shop Monday evening, because the markets are swamped on Sunday. We meal plan, and mostly eat vegetarian throughout the week. If we're planning on a meat based dinner, we'll either fix that dinner at the beginning of the week, or pick up the meat we need that day. I have a natural food market right near the school I work at, so its easy for me to swing by on the way home.

We also fix our own breakfasts and bring a bagged lunch to work
It took a little trial and error to figure out how much we need (produce, dairy, grains), but we have a system down now.

We go once a week but we buy a lot of food once a week and we have a car. If we didn't have a car, it would be much more difficult. We do the following:

-Buy bananas in various states of ripeness to last all week
-Buy large containers of yogurt and a gallon of milk
-Plan our lunches ahead of time and buy 1-2 pieces of fruit for each person per day (bananas not included, we each eat one banana a day, plus other fruit).
-I would LOVE to eat fresh but with my commute and the grocery store not being close to our house, I buy meat and fish in bulk when it is on sale and freeze it. I defrost it in the microwave or overnight.
-I buy a LOT of frozen veggies. Those steam bags are a life saver and even though they are a little more expensive than the bulk bags, we buy them b/c we only have 1/2 hour between getting home and getting dinner on the table each night.
-We don't buy a lot of local fruits because they go bad very quickly

These are just things that work for us. We shop on Sunday morning or, if we don't make it on Sunday, one of us will go after M is asleep on a weekday.
