@sarac: I totally agree. I'd like for her to be able to sleep without me but nursing her to sleep seems to make her sleep for longer stretches (since she's pretty much cluster feeding for a while) which in the end seems to help both of us.

I have nursed to sleep from the start, and mine is 13 months now. A a few months we started having daddy snuggle her to sleep when possible, and that was (sometimes) possible. Now it's increasingly possible, and while she needs me to nurse her if I'm there, she doesn't need it to sleep.

I know a lot of people don't believe in it, but I've always thought it would be a waste to not use a tool I have at my disposal. I always figured I'd rather deal with the problems it created later than not use it now, and that has worked very well for me. The problems have been far fewer than the benefits.

@Thehistoryofus: That's good to know! It caught me really off guard since usually she has to nurse completely to sleep, I can't put her down even slightly drowsy. I almost wanted to wake my husband up to tell him since it was so strange but I waited until this morning.

Yes. I nursed to sleep for almost a year. But there were odd times where she was just overtired and didn't even want to eat.

I've been nursing LO to sleep since she came home pretty much. There have been times when she's gone to sleep on her own but not recently. Last night she was a mess because she refused to nap all day. She ate around 9:00pm and then wanted nothing to do with me at 9:30 unless I was carrying her around. So I carried her a bit and she laid and entertained herself for a while. She looked sleepy so I tried to nurse her again and she got angry. When I laid her down, she fell asleep completely on her own and slept for a while.

I did appreciate it since I want to break her of the habit around 4 months (she's 3 months now) but it was strange. Has your LO ever just randomly not needed (or wanted) to be nursed to sleep?
