I taught him to sit but eventually he saw dad standing up and wanted to do the same (a few months before he turned 3)

I intended to teach him to sit (just because I thought that's what you're supposed to do), but he wanted to stand. He would kind of straddle the potty and go. It does make using public restrooms much easier since we don't have to deal with touching the toilet.

Sitting. They can learn to stand when they can learn to aim.

We started with sitting. To be honest I am the one they are around most so they saw me sitting. Now that they ate even more curious they have gone in with my husband and saw him standing. Now they want to stand sometimes. One of the problems with standing is that not all toilets are low enough for them without a stool. So public restrooms can be tricky.

I plan to teach him to sit, but he doesn't like the potty I chose, so I am just letting him do what he prefers until we get something else....my husband sits unless it's a urinal too...don't know why, to be honest.

@BoogieBea: Well my husband is an odd one, and he sits on the toilet. So my son has only ever seen us sitting. I think it might confuse him to teach him to stand.

@yin: we're having him sit too. Just thought it'd be easier, but wondering if people train them to stand from the get go.

I have no idea, but I think we are planning on training him to sit.

Did you train then to do #1 standing or sitting initially?
