I have a gluten intolerance and found that it went away while pregnant. Which is good bc all I wanted was carbs. However, its definitely come back postpartum.

@Foodnerd81: i'm always surprised too, though i'll admit it has gotten SO much better than when i was first diagnosed! and you're right, i'll probably feel like crap and not want to eat out anyway...things to look forward to, haha!

@Ginger333: i think that's exactly what i need to do, be adamant that there are only a few places i'll eat out. it's fine with DH, but my friends like to meet in other areas where i don't know as many places that i'm comfortable eating at.

@BelugaBean: so frustrating! do they not want repeat business?!

@MrsH: that's a great tip! i should definitely start dressing the salad so they have to give me a new one. I wish i'd thought of that! and i agree it's gotten sooo much better, but i need to realize that doesn't mean i'm safe wherever I go!

@Pirouette: argh!!! Stupid kitchen people!!! I do try and eat at places where I know they understand and if I send something back I try and pick through it to make sure it is a new one (ill even put dressing or something on the old one to make sure they need to make a new one).

Kitchens have gotten a lot better in the last decade. When I first went GF it was horrible.

So sorry you got glutened I would definitely bring up that you are preggers when the time comes.

I don't really have any advice since I don't have Celiac but one of my friends used to and I never understood why people couldn't handle changing the dish just a little bit. She was very clear once that she was ordering a steak but that she could not have the marinade or it could make her very sick. It came out and of course it was drenched in the marinade!

I never found getting glutened any worse when I was pregnant, I don't know if I was less sensitive or more cautious but I only had it happen once and it didn't last as long as it did when I wasn't pregnant. PP was much worse, I was more tired and less apt to be as careful as I should have been ... live and learn.
Mostly we just stuck to places that I knew understood what Celiac was and that we've had luck with before. We kinda still do that now, going out to eat just isn't as fun at a new place.

I'm really surprised restaurants are so careless with this, when there is so much hoopla about allergies these days-- every menu has the note about notifying your server of any allergies, etc.

I don't have any severe allergies or intolerances, but I'm somewhat lactose intolerant and I have found it is much less of an issue now while I'm pregnant. But even before, if I had too much dairy, I just got a stomach ache for a few hours or a day, at the most, it wasn't as severe as yours.

I will say I hardly ate out at all in the first trimester, since i felt like crap, but we ordered in a lot and that probably has an even higher chance of them messing up with allergens.

@MrsH: UGH i HATE being glutened!! i'm so sorry you have to deal with it too :( i was so frustrated last night, because i explained it very clearly to the server (even called it an allergy!) and she understood, but the kitchen still sent out my salad with croutons. i sent it back and made it very clear i needed a NEW salad because one bread crumb would make me sick, so what do they do? transfer the same salad to a new plate and pick out the croutons. i didn't realize that until i got half way through and came across half a crouton and a whole bunch of crumbs at the bottom of the plate. my heart sank!

@LivsMama: maybe once i'm pregnant telling them i'm pregnant AND have an allergy will help get the message across!

@Pirouette: I didn't know you were celiac! I hate being glutened!! If you are going to eat out, I don't think you can do anymore than be really careful and really vocal about not being able to eat gluten. Even though it isn't technically correct I find that if I tell people I'm allergic to gluten that I get better service/less cross contamination issues.

I had a SERIOUS gluten intolerance for years before pregnancy. It completely went away while I was pregnant, and has yet to come back. Dairy makes me ill though. I just told them, Im allergic to dairy and Im pregnant, can you please be sure there is no dairy (or raw eggs, etc) in my dish?"

@Mrs. Jacks: do you mean you didn't have as many symptoms? or your body didn't actually produce the same autoimmune response as it did pre-pregnancy? that's interesting...i wonder why that would be!

My autoimmune issues were much better during pregnancy. I hope yours are too. We couldn't eat out when my daughter had mspi. The whole family suffered when we tried!

How did you handle eating out while you were pregnant? I don't have an allergy, i have Celiac, and a bread crumb will make me severely ill for several days or even a week or two. it is an auto immune response, so it affects my entire body.

i know it's not feasible to avoid eating anything not prepared by me entirely for 9 months. I'm just scared that once i'm pregnant, the stakes are that much higher, so to speak, and eating out will be that much more dangerous for my body.

I'm not pregnant at the moment, but we are TTC and last night i got glutened in a restaurant (after multiple warnings about the seriousness of my disease and the importance of no croutons on my salad!) and I am very ill today. i just kept thinking "what if i was pregnant?" (i'm in the TWW, but only 3DPO so i'm guessing it's too early to matter), and especially in the first tri, before you are telling people, how do you avoid drinking AND eating out?

Just wondering if anyone has any tips or stories to share about how they handled this to stay healthy while pregnant!
