So if you add it all up throughout the day, sleep looks like crap. Baby is 6w old today. But in reality, its not so bad. The last few nights we've been able to get him down a little earlier each night. Last night we got him down around 11:30pm. Then he slept about 4.5 hours. I fed him, and he slept/kept quiet for about 2.5hrs. Then I feed him again and can get him to sleep for either 1 or 3 hours. And from there its all a crapshoot. I can usually get at least a half hour out of him in the afternoon, then if my mom comes over he'll fall asleep in her arms for an hour or more.

The one thing that has been helping is that we're topping him off with a bottle after the last feed of the night. DH said that he was really easy to get to sleep after the bottle last night. I think my supply drops in the evening because baby wants to eat more often, so the bottle really helps fill him up.

Also, a friend suggested wearing him after feeds to get some sleep. Its been way too hot here, but it looks like today starts cooler weather, so I'm going to try it if I can't get him down the normal way. Also, get a yoga ball! Its really saved us the last few days.

My son is 2.5 weeks and last night we got our longest sleep session yet- almost 5 hours! He's surpassed his birth weight so the pediatrician said it wasn't necessary to wake him for feedings. He only just started sleeping in his bassinet (next to my bed) 5 days ago, so I was psyched when I realized he'd slept until 4 am!
For us I think what helps the most is that my MIL has been staying with us and keeps him up for a long stretch every evening before bed. We're not worried about a sleep schedule yet since he hasn't established a circadian rhythm and she pushes his nightly party time up by 10-15 each night. Last night he was awake from 7-10:30 and was fed, swaddled, and asleep by 11. He also has a few shorter party periods during the day (typically 2 hours 2x a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon). He doesn't show any signs of being over tired and I really feel like it's working for us! I know it can (and probably will) change in a heartbeat, but for right now it's AWESOME

For the first 10 or so days sleep was fantastic. She napped all day and woke only to eat. At night she gave us 3-4 hr stretches. We were calling her our penance for LO 1.

Then it all went to shit! I spend all morning her to nap. Then at night she wakes every 1-2hrs. Sigh. It's still better than her big sister ever was so I can't complain, too much.

At that age, I was lucky to get one 3-hr. Stretch. I was not sure how I would survive. I did, and it got better soon after that.

@night cheese: do you spend a lot of time at home with her? The times we have travelled or been on the go a lot, F has amazing sleep nights (5-6 hour stretches vs 2-4 hours), but while on maternity leave I've spent most my time at home. He's 9 weeks now, and I FX think I'm starting to see a trend toward 4-5 hour night stretches. We can usually count of 4-5 first time, then progressively shorter sleep between wake-ups until around 8 when we get up for the day.

Ugh, I'm sorry. Baby sleep sucks.

I hesitate to even say this because my son slept great as a newborn too but it all went to crap when he was 4 months and he didn't STTN again until after he was one, but she is 4 weeks and sleeping pretty good at night. She is a little fuss pants in the evening and we can't get her down until almost midnight but the last 2 nights, she slept 6 hours and 5 hours in her rock n play. She woke up and then came to our bed and slept in 2-3 hour increments after that.

Around 8 weeks we started getting longer stretches, but we also started regimenting a bedtime routine (bath, lights dimmed way down, no TV or other loud noises, nursing, then bed in her own room). So I don't know that one or all of those things helped? I just felt like I had to make an extra effort to differentiate between daytime and nighttime.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's abnormal to get that many wake-ups from what I have heard from other mothers.

Sounds totally normal to me. My LO is almost 13 weeks and still eats every 2-3 hours. As far as night time sleep, that is a different story. We are planning on sleep training soon. He used to do 2-3 hour stretches at night, but that has all gone to hell! Good luck to you!

I'm lucky... my baby is 2 weeks old and while she fusses from around 11:30pm to 3:00am nightly, she sleeps really well the rest of the day. Like good 2-3 hour stretches, sometimes 4. I actually feel pretty well rested as long as I nap some of the times she's sleeping during the day.

Baby sleep is crazy! My son slept through the night starting at 5 weeks. I went back to work at 12 weeks and he started waking up at night starting at 13 weeks. He's now 20 weeks and still waking up anywhere from 1-3 times per night. I thought we were in the clear but going back to work has proved he has other ideas. I'm telling myself he misses me and needs extra snuggles! It's tough!

Well, I hesitate writing this because then I feel like it would change. My LO is now 8 weeks. At three weeks, I started putting LO in her own room, completely dark, in the rock and play, sound machine turned all the way up, miracle blanket too. She wakes up once a night this way but then it takes me about an hour to get her to go back to sleep. She nurses to sleep. The key is getting her in the miracle blanket wrapped super tight or else she gets her hands out and wakes herself.

Mine is almost 8 weeks and still wakes up every 1.5-2 hours a night. Once in a while, we might get a 3-hour stretch out of her.

Everyone I know IRL must have magical unicorn babies because they're all telling me that by 8 weeks, their babies were sleeping for 5-6 hour stretches.

Or maybe we're just doing something wrong, who knows? But I go back to work in a month and I have no idea how I'm going to work on hardly any sleep.

How is everyone else's newborn sleeping?
