My LO signed a number of words very early and it helped her communicate with us. It has not done anything at all to impair her speech development (she's almost 2 years old now).

We're already a bilingual family and I felt strongly about not adding a third language.

It was REALLY helpful in her communication and I think she is better off for it now. Yes there are times when she chooses to sign the word "please" rather than say it but I know she can say it perfectly well.

That makes me giggle. My 19 month old has been full subject-verb-object sentences for a few months now - which is super verbal. We did baby sign, and it was HUGELY useful for understanding her needs before she had the spoken word down. For her it was nothing but positive - as it would be for everyone, I suspect.

In plan to do this with my baby. At the same time you sign the words you say them too.

Our daycare did a few signs with my second. I would say when done correctly it does help a little bit. Even though studies say it does not delay speech, that is when it is used in conjuction with using words and I do know people that taught their kids signs and didn't really reinforce the sign with words (like sign for more and say more at the same time) and they did notice a delay in speech.

We only taught our LO a few signs, and it helped significantly with his ability to communicate his basic needs with us.

I will be trying out baby sign language with my LO, we actually just started a week ago (she is 7.5 months). We did it in the daycare I worked at and I found it incredibly helpful.

I'm pretty neutral about it. I don't think it hinders verbal communication, but in the average child, I don't know that it actually makes a significant difference.

I have a very, very verbal 11 month old and sign language has just shown to us how much she really understands. She only uses a couple of signs (more, all done, milk, and thank you), but uses them in a variety of ways (more snacks, more and milk tofether when she wants to nurse more, all done playing or all done with food). I am so glad she uses the signs she does. It's pretty awesome.

It does not impair baby's acquisition of language. There have been studies done on this. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/baby-sign-language/AN02127 Just some general information. I did ASL signs with my oldest and found it very helpful as she was fairly delayed in expressive language, but had a very large receptive vocabulary. It allowed us to communicate more effectively. Lorelei, on the other hand, is very verbal, and so although I planned to do signing with her, I found it to be unnecessary.

The research I have read says that teaching a baby sign language does not affect the rate of their verbal communication at all, and can actually help improve it!

What are your thoughts on baby sign language? I've always thought is was all positives, but my SIL is very against it. She thinks teaching her kids sign language will delay and impair their speech.

What do you guys think?
