I have looked through the medical journals I can search at work before, and I am yet to find any legitimate, peer reviewed journal article that indicates that microwave cooking of food is hazardous in any way.

@chopsuey119: I used the toaster oven tonight. It really didn't take all that long but DH was around. Usually he is not here and LO is clinging to my leg crying for food so we'll see how it goes Monday night when DH is not here!

I can't use my microwave anymore since reading this. :P
I put water in a pot, placed LO's food in a glass jar and heated her food up in boiling water. Worked well!

I don't really worry about it. I figure if I warm it up on a real plate or bowl, I'm fine. I do plan on steaming food that I'll make into baby food on the stove top, but that's just because it will be big batches.

We don't own a microwave. We haven't owned a microwave in over 4.5 years! I don't think we will ever own a microwave again, unless a house we rent or buy has one built in.

I dunno, I am old school I guess. For me, the microwave is good for melting butter for use in cooking and that's about it.

I never cook or reheat in a microwave, but that's probably because I grew up without one and learned other methods, not because of the potential side effects.

I intend to continue using my microwave - it's just so much easier! But I always try to avoid heating up plastic containers, even if it's microwave proof, I usually transfer it to plate.

I was going to say, isn't heating in any way going to disturb molecules?? We use the microwave freely, but we are careful as to what containers we use to heat in. Usually ceramic or glass.

I mix it up. I'll try to heat things up on the stove but if time absolutely doesn't permit, then i'll just microwave it just a bit. I actually found that it really doesn't take all that much longer to reheat things on the stove. I have a little saucepan just for the purpose of heating small amounts of food. Just that it's one thing extra to pull out and clean afterwards. And I just got a hot water dispenser so that I have hot water on hand in case I want to steam something quickly and not have to wait as long for water to boil.

I'm sure they're right that it's not as healthy as non-microwaved food but it's not like your LO is getting NO nutrients from it. As long as everything she eats isn't out of the microwave, I wouldn't worry about it. All in moderation. :)

@Andrea: Lol- I just googled "Microwave harms food" and the amount of sensational websites is crazy! No wonder you were concerned. I did find an article that put together where the fear is coming from that you might want to check out. All the info in that article makes sense. http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2006/03/23/1597903.htm (and unfortunaltely, I have no idea how to turn that into a hyperlink with my phone).

@artbee: I know it doesn't make much sense but that is how I feel! Like I just went to get my car serviced and the only reason why I took the most expensive $150 package was because I drive my LO around. If it was just me in the car, I would have just gotten the cheaper $50 check!

I do have some background, and my gut says not to worry about the microwave. If you have a reference where you got the info, I could check it out and see if makes sense or not. Food molecules get agiatated by heating in general, so whether it's by stove or microwave, that wouldn't make a difference. What some of the others posters have said about plastic in the microwave is true. Don't use old sour cream containers, etc. in the microwave because they leech chemicals when warm. Microwave-safe containers are fine. There have been studies that show that the plastic components leeching out is negligible.

Could you heat it up in the oven? It would take a little longer, but maybe you can find something to do to entertain her and stall for a bit.

Personally, I use the microwave. My hubby doesn't like it, but if he wants to start cooking fresh all the time and not freeze her meals then he's allowed, and he doesn't want to do that.

Heating up food in the microwave is definitely not the best option, especially if its in plastic containers. we only use glass or ceremic in our microwave but as much as possible my husband prefers for us to heat up food in out oven, toaster grill or on the stove top. Food heats up more evenly on the stove top anyway

i have zero background, but they say heating it up from the stove vs microwave is different and supposely microwave kills any "good" nutrients. i believe it. sometimes though (usually), convenience wins hands down! maybe compromise and use a toaster oven? when i "toast" things, it's pretty quick (less than 4 min?)....not sure if you have any baby dishes that could withstand the heat though.

edit: actually, might take longer with a "real" meal, like spaghetti. so maybe just stovetop with high heat?

Is it that the items are cold from the fridge, or do you have to defrost?

We don't have a microwave, so I have to heat stuff up either on the stove or in a double boiler over water, which is what I do for DS's stuff so it doesn't scorch.

@MrsBrewer: i've been doing some reading and "supposedly" it changes the composition of your food since microwaving works by agitating the molecules in your food. and then this friction creates new stuff which causes cancer.

i have no idea if this is true. maybe someone with the appropriate background can shed some light!
