I tried Kava during a trip to Fiji. I hated the taste and it gave me a more buzzed feeling than the feeling of sleep. You may need to ask a naturopath instead of your regular doctor, my experience is most western doctors don't know a thing about natural remedies so they tend to not recommend them. Also, lately I have been hearing more and more about essential oils and their benefits and I know there are some that help with sleep.

@Tanjowen: melatonin worked best for me. I used to drink a kava tea and it definitely had a relaxing effect. However, my sleep would be interrupted by needing to pee since I drank tea right before bed! Good luck, I hope you get some good sleep soon!

@ShootingStar: I don't, but I'm going to purchase some today, so I'll start with the 10mg and see how it goes. thank you!

@mrs. bird: @Greentea: Thank you for the input! I think I'm going to start with melatonin and if it doesn't work, try the valerian root.

@Tanjowen: I used to take valerian root every night. It is a natural muscle relaxer. It was kind of a placebo for me I think- I would tell myself it was helping me fall asleep- but I think it really did relax my muscles. :) Not sure about the night waking, but I think it *could* help.

melatonin is great for helping reset your clock to help you sleep, it's really helpful when changing your schedule! valerian root works well for helping relax you so you can fall asleep, i find it works really well for me. one thing to be mindful of though is that if you are taking anything else for your anxiety, specifically any benzos, valerian root increases your blood serum level of the benzo without decreases the half life, so you need to be careful with your dosage because you can end up having a much stronger response to a dose that you might normally have only a mild response to. oh, and hold your nose when you open the jar! it smells horrendous! :D

@Tanjowen: hmm I've never been groggy the next day. I think DH hasn't either otherwise I don't think he'd take it everyday. Do you remember how much you took? I generally do 10mg.

@ShootingStar: I tried it a long time ago and I vaguely remember it making me feel groggy the next day, but it's probably worth trying again to see how it goes - thank you!

I am having some anxiety lately over some situations going on that is preventing me from sleeping well. I was doing a search on natural remedies for anxiety and ran across kava and valerian root. Seems there is a lot of controversy over kava and studies stating it might affect your kidney. I plan to call my doctor and run both by her, but I was curious if anyone has any experience with either?

I will add that my issue is not falling asleep...it's going back to sleep if I wake up in the middle of the night (which I always do at some point).
