I'm also not a fan of Toms shoes and pink Komen foundation branded items for the same reason. In the case of the Komen Foundation I read about how each $1 is split and its appalling how little money goes towards research for a cure and aid for cancer patients and survivors. If a bunch of guys not shaving their mustaches somehow reminds one man to get a prostate check, that's helping. If a young girl with breast cancer feels better about her day because she sees people with pink profile pictures during breast cancer awareness month, that's helping. If a gay person on facebook feels more comfortable knowing that his/her friends support equality and is less scared to come out, that helps. Yes, putting something as your status or your facebook profile isn't going to CURE anything or change any laws, but if it encourages others to think about an issue or go to the doctor or make their day slightly better, it made a small difference. I thought it was fun but I realize that it didn't promote awareness. The message was probably lost in the whole 'lets confuse all the men on Facebook.'</p> <p>There was a share your favorite cartoon on FB to support childhood abuse a few years back and as much as everyone said it did nothing... It actually meant a lot to me. I suffered through some abuse when I was younger and it meant a lot to me to see those cartoons. It really brought back memories on how my childhood was affected by the abuse. I know it didn't create any child abuse laws but it helped me, a victim, get support. I'm sure I might been the only abuse victim to think it that way but I think of it as a success in awareness. I found out that a friend of mine was a victim of child abuse, too.</p> <p>Oh, I forget what it was but something on Facebook like this did make me change my status or pic but I took it a step further by donating money for the cause. Whatever it was, I think it was breast or pediatric cancer, it resulted in someone thinking about it (awareness) and at least one person (me) did something more. I think it completed its job.
