@MegWag: Interesting ... all 3 of my names (both with my maiden or married last names) have a total of 6 syllables between them and I've always thought they flowed well. Maybe that is why!

My favorite boy and girl names would also total 6 syllables.

I consider the flow and how it sounds together over the ending, however we did take that into account. Our last name is ridicuous long (11 letters) so we have to be careful since that is already a mouthful we don't want our kids to be doomed with a huge/confusing name.

I'm with you on the fact that middle names are rarely ever used. Sure, flow is nice, but I wouldn't toss a middle name because of it. Seriously think of all your friends; for how many of them do you even know their middle name? I think having a sentimental middle name is more important. (Like, a middle name named after someone).

I think it is very important to have the first and middle name go together. Almost to the point where it's impossible to pick a middle name because I am so weird about how it sounds with the first name.
My cousin's name is Rebecca Jessica and I always thought it was so weird how her names didn't go together.

My dad recently shared with me his theory on syllables of names. He says that there should be a total of 6 syllables between all 3 names.
Given that my name was Margaret Katherine Marcotte (before I got married), I asked him what happened there. He just laughed and said they broke the rule for me :) That said, I do think he's onto something with the rhythm...

The length of the names didn't matter and it was really important to me that his middle name be William, and we ended up with Cameron William James G-----. It's long, but we like it.

I totally agree. I am a stickler on sounding well - and I also get nervous about initial-acronyms.

My cousin just had a baby boy - her SO wanted the name Roland as a middle, and their last name starts with a D. Connor Roland D----- sounded like one long word! She nixed it, middle name is Matthew now.

@mediagirl: Me too - my first name ending in L and middle name beginning in L... it makes it a little wonky to say, so I think I'd avoid that for kiddos.

Yes, this was major for us. We knew the middle name was going to be Evelyn (after my husband's great-granny) so the first name needed to flow. My first choice for a girl was Ella, but Ella Evelyn Jazz sounded weird to me so I had to ditch that idea.

@tequiero21: Yeah, I had this with my first and middle. Until I took my last name as my middle name, I always thought it was weird that my first name rolled into my middle, which started with an L. My name is Jill. Three L's in a row!

We also considered it. I wanted the first, middle and last name to all sound good together - not necessarily just the first and middle name. When she's in trouble I would say I 3 names together and probably not just the first two.

My 3 names don't sound good together so I didn't want this for my daughter.

We too are carefully considering the sound of the names together. In particular we picked our first daughter's name to be Cecilia, so we didn't want a middle name that had an "ah" sound at the end. For our second child, we're again looking for a first name with the "ah" sound, so again we need a middle name with a different ending!

When you named your child, did you take into consideration how the first and middle names would sound together? For example, would you name your child with a first and middle name with the same emphasis on certain syllables? Like if you wanted to name your girl Lucy Zoe, both end with the E sound and have two syllables.

I personally think you don't say the child's first and middle names together enough to think it's a big deal. I can really only remember my Mom or Dad calling me by my first and middle together when I was in trouble. :)

Would you go for it because you love the names or would you have to find something else because you couldn't handle having two names that sounded similar when saying them out loud?
