I definitely don't think of it as a male name - if I saw it on paper and had to guess sex, I'd guess girl.</p> <p>My only reservation, ever, about using a perceived nickname as a whole first name, is what the child will do as an adult if they ever feel the name is too informal or childish, particularly in a professional situation. Could they use a middle name?
