@PinkElephant: I was thinking that since baby was in a bucket, the middle seat FF child would climb in first and then put the baby in.

Question for those saying to put the oldest child FF in the middle....if you do this, how does (s)he get in and out of the car around the other two rear facing seats? Particularly once other children are in them (thinking school drop off/pick up)...

We don't have 3 kids yet, but I've thought that I'd do DD1 FF on one side, DD2 RF in the middle, and an infant RF in a bucket seat on the other side.

ETA: The poster above answered the school drop off question while I was typing.

DS is in the middle since he's in a booster (least safe). If I'm looking at them from the drivers seat, DD1 is to the left in a FF convertible because DS has to be able to get out on the left side of the car for school drop off. DD2 is in her RF convertible to the right. I didn't like DS sitting in the third row since I couldn't hear him and he's great at distributing snacks, water, replacing pacifiers, making the girls laugh, etc :silly:

We have infant base behind driver, forward facing 4 year old in middle, rear facing 2 year old behind passenger. With either of the rear facing seats behind the driver my DH can't comfortably drive, so having the base behind the seat allows him to drive the car if it is just him or him and 1-2 older kids. He primarily drives the minivan anyway, and I'm short so I have no problem.

I'd do eldest in the middle, also. Then the two others based on who fits best behind the driver. If they both fit I'd put the infant behind the driver so the big kids can get out on the sidewalk side of the street.
ETA: when I needed three across this wasn't an option because of DH'S height so we had baby in the middle, RF behind passenger, and FF behind driver. It was fine.

Put the infant seat on the outside and I'd say the other 2 don't really matter.

@Grace: @mamabolt: @tinyperson: I've heard that as well, I just can't get my head around the fact that she'll be looking right at the windshield with nothing to stop any projectiles from going through the windshield straight at her. I know windshields aren't supposed to shatter, but I think the irrational side of my brain is a bit hyperactive right now!

Middle is statistically the safest, so your forward facing child would be safest there (as they would be the least protected).

As I understand it, putting your oldest in the center is the recommendation, the least protected child should be there and as the only one FF that's her.

Isn't the middle seat supposed to be the safest regardless of which way the car seat is facing?

We're going to have to upgrade to a larger car for when baby #3 arrives and I'm trying to figure out which configuration will work best. All three car seats will be in the middle row of the car we're going to get as minivans with seven full size seats aren't very common here. The standard option is to get an MPV with five full size seats and two jump seats in the back row that fold up and down as needed. The jump seats don't have isofix (latch) fittings and whilst I think they technically are ok for car seats secured with a seat belt, I'm not comfortable putting a car seat in them.

Anyway, so we'll have three car seats in a row and I'm trying to figure out what will be easiest! We'll have an infant seat with the base permanently in the car, a rearfacing convertible car seat for our then 2 yr old, and a forward facing convertible car seat for our then 4 yr old. All have isofix fittings, as do the three seats in the row, so that's not an issue. Which order would you put them in?

I was thinking of having my oldest in the middle, but then I'm a bit worried about her being forward facing in the middle seat as that seems a bit riskier if we were to be in a head on collision. Am I overthinking this? What do you do?
