@PinkElephant: seat belts only, no latch for any of the three--they center better that way
(well, the over the back of the seat latch for the FF seat(s), but not the lower latch one )

see section on 3 across: http://www.thecarcrashdetective.com/2015/08/when-use-seat-belts-vs-latch-car-seats-which-safer.html/

I know this isn't specifically a post about seats, but the new Click Tight technology on the Britax seats is really great for a painless seatbelt install. We have the Frontier and it's so easy to install with the seatbelt.

@PinkElephant: Should you ever be in the market for a new car, I legit bought the Honda Pilot for the sole reason that it has three sets of latch hooks in the second row! It's very rare to find!

@PinkElephant: that's the beauty of the van. I can use the third row and still have trunk space. I can also sit between my big girls to make sure they're behaving.

@sslm: Thanks for this. :) I know you are right, so it's good to be reminded.

@oliviaoblivia: Ahhh...we do have a third row option, but I like to keep that as trunk space so trying to avoid it.

@Littlebit7: Thank you - that site will be a great resource. I assumed the latch borrowing wasn't allowed, but it sure would be nice if there was another set of hooks! :)

You can only use latch for the center seat if the car manual states latch borrowing is allowed (most of the time it isn't). Typically if you have latch on the two outboard seats those are the only places latch can be used. you can't "borrow" and latch install in the center (check your car manual)

I would suggest posting to car seats for the littles Facebook page. They are awesome about troubleshooting things like this. They have a lot of CPSTs who moderate the board (make sure you read the user agreement first).
They will probably ask if any of the belts overlap on your vehicle and if you can get safe and independently tight installs of all seats. They can most certainly suggest the best option for the new babe, or if any of the kiddos need to be shuffled around in their current seats.

@PinkElephant: Yes, in my car I have my FF daughter in the middle. Its very nice that she can see out the front window, doesn't kick the seat and I can hand her things to hand to the RF baby.

In DH's truck that didn't work (only enough space to RF between the front two sets). So she's on the side there. But thats just for rides home from school.

@T.H.O.U.: Cool - makes the decision a lot easier for you! I was thinking that the configuration @oliviaoblivia: is suggesting makes the most sense anyway (baby on the outside driver's side, in our case), so that would put DD1 in the center position, which is where we'd probably HAVE to do the seatbelt install anyway.

@oliviaoblivia: a friend IRL told me the same thing about the most vulnerable child (FF child) going in the middle - it seems counter intuitive, since there's nothing in the middle to keep that child from being flung forward, but I know you are right!

Can I ask, do you have all your seats done w/ a seatbelt install, then? Space isn't a huge issue for us - the Acura MDX has an insanely wide backseat.

@PinkElephant: Yea I think our seat was 20lbs and DD is 40 so it was kinda a no brainer to instal hers with the seat belt.

@T.H.O.U.: Interesting! Thanks! I'll have to see what my car says about LATCH weight restrictions - I hadn't considered that. DD1 is only 30 lbs, so I think we've got a little time on that, but will cross that bridge eventually.

So is your FF convertible in the center, or on the side? In my case, if I use LATCH for the center carseat, I'd need to use the vehicle belts for both seats on the sides.

For safety reasons it's best to put the most vulnerable child in the middle, in your car the forward facing child.
You're right that you can't use the latch anchors for two seats, it compromises the weight they can hold.
Using seatbelt installs will save you some space too.

Yes, we just use the vehicle belt for one of them. Some cars you can share latch but we weren't comfortable with that.

We used the seat belt for the FF car seat because at a combined weight of 60lbs our car said no longer to use latch.

Oh, and I forgot to check if there was a rear tether in the center seat, but I'm going to assume "yes " - this would make me more comfortable using the convertible seat with only a vehicle belt installation.

I just decided to take advantage of the fact that DH had a car seat out of our SUV to move something this weekend to play with carseat configuration for when baby #3 arrives this fall. I was relieved to discover that it looks like our current carseats (Maxi Cosi Mico x1 and Maxi Cosi Pria 70 x2 - one FF and one RF) will fit in pretty much any configuration. HURRAY!

However, when I started feeling around, I think we only have two sets of LATCH system hooks. This got me thinking - sure, the car seats FIT, but how does one actually install them? Do you just use the vehicle belt for the center seat? I assume you can't hook the middle car seat to the same LATCH hooks holding the other car seats, right? And in that case is it better to have an infant seat in the middle, or a convertible? Would love practical tips from anyone else who has had to figure this out.
