Wow, 3 sounds super duper expensive! I am hesitant to buy car seats used even though I always see them on craigslist, but do you have any friends whose kids will be done with theirs soon? Maybe you could offer to buy theirs/see if that would be an option sometime soon. Or see if there are any friends of a friend whose word you would trust about whether the seat has been in an accident/treated well/purchased new.

I think with a carrier you can get away with having just one and then using bases. When you get to the convertible seats, it gets more difficult to properly install. I learned this because my work sponsored a car seat safety check with a licensed tech, and I was shocked to find that my car seat was completely not installed correctly (done by my DH) even though it seemed very solid to me. To make those adjustments every time you move the seat to a different car seemed like a huge hassle so we opted to get one for each car and not move them unless completely necessary. We have Britax for all seats. They were expensive, but for me it was worth it since I was able to hand them down to my next child (safe as long as there was no accident and within 6 yr)!

We were fine with one convertible seat for awhile, but ever since N started preschool we needed 3 (my husband's car, grandma's car, and my car) because at any given point, one of us may drop her off/pick her up.

Our primary seat is the really expensive Britax. But our two other carseats combined cost us less than $100 (less than half the price of the Britax!). We got a $30 carseat and $60 carseat as our secondary seats and she's adjusted well to all of them. She rides in those seats for short, local distances, but if we go somewhere further away we always use the primary seat.

Costco has the Safety 1st Alpha Omega carseat for under $90.... that's what I would get if you had to buy 2 extra carseats!

I think a lot of people buy 1 main one that is installed in the main vehicle and then a cheap one that is easy to install with a seat belt and can be moved around easily. You don't need the bases, just a bit more of a pain to have to route the seat belt.

Your situation is a bit tough though since it sounds like all three cars are almost used daily! You can find some good convertibles (I love the Graco MyRide 65) for just over $100 each.

oh my gosh!!!

Well I was a nanny and I just dealt with unbuckling their carseat in/out of their car and into mine all the time and sure it's a hassle but probably not worth spending another $200+ when you'll already be spending about $500 for two carseats!!

The only worrisome part is if for some reason you/the babysitter somehow forgets to get the carseat... then you're in a sticky situation.

I think my daughter will have to be switched sooner than later to a convertible car seat. The problem is right now the infant car seat gets used in three different cars!
I take her to the baby sitter (my aunt) Mon-Fri and leave the car seat since often times they go out and about on little adventures- in fact today they are even going on an hour drive to visit other family. When it comes time to pick her up my husband picks her up. My husband and I each have a base in our cars and the sitter uses a seat belt in hers.
When it comes time for the convertible car seat Ive read a lot about how having two is better and mostly everyone has the same car seats.

Would you buy 3 if you were in this situation? Any recommendations.. these seats don't seem to run cheap and I really wouldn't want to buy something cheap when it comes to my daughters safety anyways!
