@Mrs. High Heels: That's how I feel! When people brag about expensive gifts from their spouse (my SIL does this a lot), I think "but it was bought with your money..."

My family realized a couple years ago that we enjoy spending the holidays together more than getting big gifts, so we've started only buying $20 or less gifts for each other. Buying for 5 other people means we only spend $100 each but still get the joy of giving and receiving. Its been a real hit.

@tororojo: DH and I never do gifts for each other either! We usually like to do something together instead, like a nice dinner out or a weekend getaway. Something we can both enjoy! Our money comes from the same pool anyway, so we don't see the point in gifts lol.

I do a lot of DIY things. For a the women in my family I'll usually make a cookbook, this years theme is camping/cookouts and I include pictures of us from different camping trips. Then I'll make something sweet from the cookbook to go with it.

Another tip (which is too late now but will be helpful for next year) is to start early. I always pick up things when I see good sales no matter what month it is and put it away in my closet. That way I'm not waiting to buy everything at once and I can get some awesome sales throughout the year.

We like Ross/Marshalls for gifts when possible. And DH and I have yet to get each other a Christmas gift--I know some people wouldn't go for this, but we like saving the money! We just purchase as normal and treat ourselves nicely during the holiday season but don't do actual presents for each other.

I picked out inexpensive gifts on Amazon (like in the $25 range for each person) and then we are probably going to frame some newborn pictures and give each family members one of those as well.

Gosh, I know. We're working on saving as much as possible, too! We've already decided not to fly home to save, but I really would like to be frugal with gift buying, too.

Our baby is going to be arriving the week before Christmas, so I feel you! We started shopping really early to break the costs down, and did a fair amount of purchases at stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. For some relatives, their presents consists of baby pics in nice frames with a sweet note/poem. We also limited how many presents to buy. We bought a joint present for MIL and FIL, things like that.
Hope this helps!

My SIL, last year, was planning a wedding and paying off student loans and decided to get everyone a book she thought they would enjoy. Some of them were bought new and some of them were bought used. You could easily buy off Half.com or go to a used book store or even thrift stores and find books.

She bought me the Ann Rice Vampire Chronicles. It was a used book but had an amazing cover and I liked that it looked older and worn in.
