I also agree that fixing the latch is the most important thing! Shallow latch usually causes vasospasms. Have Lo chexked for tongue and lip tues!

@mfa_lady: Sure, go ahead and wall me, I'd be happy to send it over. For heat, I put rice in a big sock and microwaved it. Seemed to help pretty well.

And DS has just started pulling at the breast again, so my pain is back :(

@Mrs.Someone: I would LOVE to see that doc. I'll wall you my email? There are IBCLCs at our pediatrician, so I will make an appointment with one of them. Thank you so much!

ETA: yes to the heat. I've been in and out of the shower nonstop! January is not a great time for this. :bummed:

@mfa_lady: I did have it (and a lot of other BF problems) when DS was smaller. It was awful! Heat helped some, but his latch was the cause, so that of course was the most important thing. I'd highly suggest seeing an IBCLC in your area, maybe check Yelp for good reviews? My first LC didn't help fix it, but the second did right away. Also, I can send you a .doc of a "care plan" for it if you want other ideas.

@Mrs.Someone: do you have Reynaud's too? Isn't it the worst? And I've seen an LC at our ped practice, but they haven't watched me feed yet--we've just talked. Good to know that latch can affect it too!

@Running Elley: Hey there--what kind of treatment plan did you get on when you experienced Reynaud's? I have Reynaud's in my fingers and toes in normal, non-breastfeeding life and unfortunately I'm now experiencing it while BFing my 2 week old DD. Just wondering if you were able to find ways to manage the pain!

Update: I just got off the phone with my lactation consultant and just from hearing my symptoms she immediately suspected Raynaud's as well. She referred me to a lactation doctor so that I can be officially diagnosed and started on a treatment plan. I hope I can get in quickly! Until them I'm just hanging on.

@hilsy85: Thank you! I think I'll call my ped tomorrow. I just did some more research (googling lol) and apparently people with Raynaud's is apparently Also often associated with ppl who have hypothyroidism (which I do) and rheumatoid arthritis (which I'm genetically disposed to since my grandma and mom both have it).

@Running Elley: That DEFINITELY sounds like Reynaud's in that case. I would speak to your pedi about it, but that's just me...my pedi seems more knowledgeable about breastfeeding than my OB. I hear ya on feeling guilty over not loving nursing more...right now it's more "bite my lip and get through it".

@hilsy85: Yes I experience blanching too! I forgot to mention that. And the cold sensitivity. Would you call OB, ped, LC, primary care? I don't know who'd handle it. Im not sure if he's been checked specifically for tongue tie but both our lactation consultant and his pediatrician have checked out the inside of his mouth, I'd think that they would have noticed then? I don't know. The initial latch is the most painful part but it hurts through the whole nursing session on my left side, just not as sharply as at first.

I feel guilty for dreading nursing sessions :( I want to love it!

@Running Elley: I also considered vasospasms for me but they often seem to go in conjunction with reynaud's. You said it gets worse when you're cold which I think is anothe symptom

No advice except I have something similar, which you know already...my pain is also a throbbing that happens after he nurses. It's also worse at night for me! Even tho the latch looks good, has he been checked for a tongue tie? Also do you notice any blanching (like whitening) of your nipple at any point? That could be reynaud's. Anyway, sorry were both still experiencing this ! :(

@banana: LOL I figured that's what you meant :)
@BabyBoecksMom: @banana: That seems to be what comes up in my consultation with Dr. Google today haha. The only thing that makes me wonder if it could be something else is the fact that I don't display any other symptoms of thrush. I do think it's time to call a professional though.

This may sound crazy but I found something about breast vasospasms that sounds a lot like what I've been experiencing. Does anyone know anything about that?

LO is 7 weeks old and breastfeeding has never been free of pain for me. It had gotten better for awhile and I thought it was all going well but in the past week and a half my "nipple soreness" has gotten a lot worse, especially on my left side. On the left side after every nursing session for the past week I've had throbbing pain that goes deep into the breast and sometimes feels like it goes all the way through to my back? It seems worst after E's night feeding and has gotten to the point where it's hard to fall back asleep through the pain. I was so scared to nurse on that side that I nursed exclusively on the right and pumped the painful side.

I've seen a lactation consultant multiple times and she's never seen a problem with his latch- he always nurses perfectly there.

I'm not sure what to do.... Any advice?
