I only ever had two roommates, both during freshman year in the dorms. First semester my roommate made friends on the internet all over the world and would call them on our shared landline (it was 2000), or they would call her collect. I picked up the phone once and it was a collect call for "freshmangirl69" or whatever her handle was. I divided the bills based on our call useage, one month her portion was over $1200!!!

The second semester I roomed with my best friend from first semester - big mistake! I found out she'd had a threesome in our room, on my bed, 'cause it was the bottom. Then, while we were studying for finals, I asked her to get rid of a spider (I was a wuss back then) that had dropped right if front of me (she never minded before), and she grabbed one of my papers with my notes on it and crumpled it up on the spider. She also pushed me back into the shelf and doorknob when I tried to stop her. I think we stopped talking around then.

I had one absolutely terrible roommate. There were 3 of us, and I was friends with my roommate who I'll call C. C was friends with A, so I trusted her judgement on roommates. A was awful. She basically had her boyfriend move in with us and stay in her room with her. He used all of our stuff, ate all of our food, used our water, internet, cable, etc, and didn't pay a dime towards rent or any utility. They were also home ALL THE TIME, and spent most of their time in the common areas.

One night, DH (who was my boyfriend at the time) and I came back to my house from being out for dinner. It was around 11ish, and he came in for a few minutes. As we approached the door, I smelled gas. I opened the door, and the house was FILLED with gas. A had left the gas burner on low, and the flame went out. She left to go out to the bar with her boyfriend, and gas was pouring into the house with C sleeping upstairs having no idea anything was going on. It was a row home, so if a neighbor so much as lit a cigarette, the entire row would have gone up.

We had a month left on our lease, and I had enough of her. I completely flipped out on her irresponsibility of almost killing all of us. Her boyfriend told me that I was overreacting. C...who hates confrontation, totally shut him down. I don't ever remember being that angry at anyone, ever. C and I moved out and got our own place together until we both got married.

My freshman year dorm mates were awesome. Sophomore year I shared an apartment with friends that were in the same major as me. I hated that with the fiery passion of a thousands Suns. So many reasons. Disgusting things like used condoms on the living room floor. To ridiculous things like the one girl walking around in short shorts and a tank top but turning the heat in the house up to 80, with her bedroom window opened. In beeping winter.

I was lucky enough to live with two AWESOME best friends for 7 years (through college & after) and during our first 4 years living together we always had 1-2 other people living with us. 2 were particularly bad.

One used to come home super late every night after being out partying and would cook a ton of food and leave it all over the kitchen & always leave the milk out on the counter, like, every night. She NEVER did her dishes - so we just started putting them in her room and she got the "hint" haha, but it was still an ongoing issue.

The other one sorta went off the deep end, put a lock on her door, and eventually moved out without any notice which was tough because we had to makeup the $ for her share of the rent.

I had one roommate who basically had her boyfriend living with us Monday through Friday. He didn't live with us on weekends because he spent weekends with his OTHER girlfriend, who didn't know that he and my roommate were more than friends. He used to lounge around wearing just her short robe and sometimes I'd come home to find them both naked under a blanket on the couch (MY couch!) in the living room. It was...uncomfortable.

I had another roommate who ate only tv dinners on paper plates and drank oj straight from the carton (not actually a problem, never had to deal with dirty dishes that weren't mine!), and once seriously-not-kidding found a mop in our closet and asked me what it was.

I had...interesting roommates...most of my college career.

Freshman year there were three of us in a smallish apartment type situation and one of the other two just moved out suddenly, without warning, and told my other roommate it was because of me. We had literally no warning, she hadn't complained about me, other roommate was confused as to why she would, etc. It was beyond bizarre. She deleted me off of Facebook, refused to look at me if we passed walking by, etc. Anyways, so she left us in a lurch and either needing to fund several thousand dollars on our own or find someone else unexpectedly. The other girl in that situation was fine and we're good friends to this day but she was the type who was REALLY into politics Freshman year (and pretty much only freshman year haha) and she plastered our apartment in Barack Obama posters despite the fact that I didn't agree with her political views. Finally we compromised and agreed she could have some INSIDE the apartment but not on our windows. :silly: She was also the type to have a new boyfriend every week and I came home to her making out with someone new all the time which was just...awkward.

Second year my roommate was someone random because I didn't want to go the live with friends option, which looking back was a mistake. She almost got kicked out of school due to grades and her older brother somehow got my number and was calling me all the time to "check in" and make sure she was studying, going to class, etc. which was just awkward because I didn't want to rat her out. She also never cleaned so her side of our space looked like a bomb went off.

Junior year I lived in a house with NINE girls and as you can imagine, drama was king. This roommate was probably the worst. She liked to have conversations with me...while naked. She would just walk up, buck naked, and talk for like 30 minutes about her day. It was WEIRD. She was also obsessed with Disney and decorated her side of our shared room with tons of Disney princess paraphernalia. I hated that. We also had a roommate in that house that I shared a bathroom with and she would leave little pieces of toilet paper with blood on them (she scratched/picked at her skin) around the bathroom every single day and one day she got blood somehow ALL over the shower curtain and refused to clean it. Very odd. Oh, that same girl also asked me to buy her gas on a few occasions and even asked me to pay her rent once. (I didn't.)

My senior year I lived in a house with 9 other girls as well and it was a lot better because I had my own room but still got to live with several friends. We still had our issues but for the most part everyone was respectful.

I don't miss roommates. Or college. :P

Not me, but an ex lived with a roommate (well he rented the finished basement of his house to a friend) when they were in their late 20s and the roommate would use all of his toiletries, so he took to keeping his shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc in his room. The roommate also never replaced the toilet paper (or bought toilet paper) and would just use tissues instead, until those were gone too. He would eat food in the fridge that didn't belong to him - including our dinner/takeout leftovers!

Also, he was just a jerk.

I only had two terrible ones. My first roommate J hated people and wasn't social at all. I liked to keep the door open and interact with our neighbors, but as soon as I would leave, she would shut/lock it. She also slept with the TV on and had the a/c blasting because she was a bigger girl and always hot. We were also wildly different religiously: I'm a Christian and she was Wiccan. She moved out after a couple of months because we just didn't click.

My junior year, I roomed with a friend and it was terrible. We should never live together. She used to smoke in the bathroom all the time because she couldn't be bothered to go downstairs (smoking was against the rules in the dorms and I'm allergic), she constantly tried to turn our other friends against me, and was just awful. Eventually, two of us moved out because she was so bad and then she left school, which pissed me off more because I went through the hassle of finding a new dorm and moving my belongings mid-year.

I had one terrible, awful roommate in college. She scarred me.

The terrible roommate did every roommate sin in the book. Her boyfriend was at our house 24/7...except the time I came home to hear her loudly having sex; then the phone rang..and whatya know, it was her BF calling to ask where she was. So yeah, the guy in her room was not her boyfriend. She would take my clothes without asking, wear them, and ruin them. I bought myself a cute pair of embroidered suede tall boots. Before I ever even wore them, she took them and wore them to a frat party and walked in muddy grass in the rain. They were ruined. She bought a cat without asking me, then was never home and totally ignored it until it went crazy and started acting out by peeing on everything and clawing up her bed. She hit on my most recent ex boyfriend. We were super poor and she would eat all the food I just bought for myself. Her BF came to my house (when I wasn't there) and used my desk top and printer to print 25 class copies of a stupid 10 page story he wrote for a creative writing class. He finished all my ink and paper. Didn't replace. When I finally got her to move out, she stole two of my shirts and all my silverware.

If you can believe it, we were FRIENDS our freshman year in the dorms. She was pretty nuts.

Luckily, I had great roommates after her.

I do nottttt miss those days! I literally have been the roommate keeping toilet paper in her room. I've had a lot of roommates over the years and they are all lovely people but it is seriously hard to live with some people. One of my best, best friends and I just could not live together because she was a cleaning FREAK (and I am a clean person! seriously.) But like, she wanted the toilet scrubbed every single day and lost her mind of there was any sort of mess anywhere. We are still friends but towards the end of our lease, it was ugly!

One thing that might work is a communal pool of money that they use to buy household products. Or 1 person buys all of the household products and they split it at the end of the month like a utility.

That's hilarious. Toilet paper is a big bone of contention with roommates, I think because it represents everything else: consideration, splitting work & finances fairly, etc. I remember when my grad school roommate and I were getting to know each other, the first thing she said was "I just want you to know I go through toilet paper like it's going out of style!" I was like okeeee 😒😂

I going to guess most of us have had roommates at some point in our lives.

My BIL use to live with us but that wasn’t working out so we asked him the leave.

He has been living with roommates for about 6 months now and every time we have seen him recently (about once a month) he whines about how they don’t chip in on things like toilet paper. He complains about having to buy a ton of toilet paper the most. He even goes into details about how much toilet paper his roommates use and how they could reduce. He’s complained about this at least 4 times so far to us… it’s like a massive rant.

I really had nothing to say to this because I never had this problem… when I was in college… I was lucky and all my roommates were pretty considerate. In fact the only inconsiderate roommate I ever had was probably my BIL!! Which is why we eventually had to ask him to leave.

I was telling some friends about this and they all had suggestions to help him!

The funniest one was they said to tell him to keep the toilet paper in his room. If his roommates ask about … he could tell them that oh he found out he needs to use a special kind of toilet paper and he can’t share with them anymore… sorry!

Haha! I’m impressed with how many solutions I have heard to this issue. I thought I would tell you guys and see what you come up with. If you want to share some funny roommate stories that would be great too!
