oh another thing i do to minimize the throwing of food on the floor is not give him all his food at once. he gets a few bites, then he often to points to what he wants next. or we offer something else and he lets us know if he wants it. If all he really does is start throwing and not eating, then we take it to mean that he is done eating - as he doesn't usually throw from the moment he sits down.

My 10 month old already does this and I have no idea at all how to deal with it, particularly as she grows into toddlerhood and becomes more aware!! Yesterday, at lunch, she refused her risotto and threw all her green beans and asparagus on the floor (dangled each piece over the high chair then dropped it) but then demolished her fromage frais and her orange segments. i guess she threw the bits she wasn't really enjoying..... but she can't live off pudding alone, can she?! :bummed:

i try not to give it attention or I redirect by showing/telling him what he should be doing and then praising when he puts food on the table/plate or gives it to us when he doesn't want it.

the key is always reinforce and give attention to the behaviors you like and ignore the ones you don't want (as hard as that can be!)

ETA. and when he does throw food on the floor (or even drop by accident), he often points at it and signals he wants it, but i repeatedly tell him that we don't eat food off the floor and so it has to go in the garbage now (natural consequences).

I take him out of his high chair and end meal time. Usually he doesn't do this unless he's full anyways in our case.

It usually signals that she's done. If its closer to the end I will take it and get her out of the chair to wash up. If its closer to the beginning I take it away tell her no throwing wait a bit then put the tray back. Sometimes that works.

Same problem here at 20 months. Our doctor said to end the meal immediately when he starts throwing. It "helps" in that he doesn't have any more food to throw at that meal, but it sure hasn't stopped him from throwing at the next meal

How to get my almost 2 year old to stop throwing food all over the room at every meal? Tried yelling/sternly saying NO and smacking her hand, taking food away etc... Nothing seems to work.
