@babynumber1: i like that quiet time idea- will have to try that!

@highwire: we try that too, but even on the floor or couch she goes crazy too! i think she just hates being on her back and has more important things to do than put on clothes or a diap lol

@mrskc: oh man, me too!! narrating what you are doing might help- i will have to try that...it must be an 8/9 month old thing!

@hellobeeboston: i HOPE its just a phase! hopefully it passes for both of us soon! it is soo hard to change a cranky crying baby who moves all over the place!

@cascademom: lol, M prefers the ABCs or twinkle twinkle...but even my singing wont calm her down :(

@Mrs. Bee: omg i hope that is the case for us!! maybe she will get it all out of her system now! hehe

Olive started throwing tantrums really young... maybe that age, and she throws several a day now at 21 months if she doesn't get her way. Luckily she is usually pacified pretty easily, but sometimes babies that throw tantrums young are better in their 2's and 3's. That's been the experience of two of our good friends so hopefully that's the case for you!

My 10 month old is doing this especially with the changing table. We have to sing "the wheels on the bus" to calm him down. I like the idea of quiet time.

@NovBaby1112: our changing table is also the worst place ever lately! He HATES it -- sometimes I just change him on the floor but he still hates it---- I feel like maybe they think lying down = nap? Who knows. It's tough! I would ignore the tantrums and stick with distraction - hopefully it's just a phase!

Oh my gosh! My almost 9 month old is doing this too! It happens mostly at home though. He absolutely hates when I try and dress him or change his diaper. I give him a toy to try and distract him or we've found narrating what we're doing helps him. I just try and do whatever thing I'm trying to do with him as quickly as possible and then sit him up and distract him with something. He's had a few full on crying, kicking legs little baby tantrums. I'm scared for the toddler years!

@NovBaby1112: We have moved diaper changes and dressing to the floor a lot of the time!

Our LO went through a stage at 11 months of tantrums. We started to do quiet time in her room. That seemed to work, but ours normally occurred at home.

We would sit her in her rocking chair and we sat in the glider until she calmed herself down. She seemed to have a problem getting her emotions under control for a few weeks. Luckily, this went as quickly as it came.

@hilsy85: lol, glad I am not the only one dealing with this! I've resorted to putting her diaper on while she's crawling around, but its very difficult haha. I might have to try the shower idea- that might work better! LOL the "special toy"...M also loves all things that aren't toys, so that works for us sometimes too!

@Weagle: thanks for the advice! I will make sure to do that

Make sure she's safe, finish the task quickly, and ignore the tantrum as best as possible.

We are having the SAME issue, especially related to diaper/clothing changes and bathtime. LO acts like I am pulling out his fingernails when I try to sit him down or lie him down. Honestly, for bath time, I just try to get it over as quickly as possible. I may even try to put him in our stall shower to see if that's a bit better. For diaper changes, giving him a "Special toy" (diaper cream, my phone, etc) seems to help, as does singing to him. But he is a major drama king as well!

Let me just say if this is how she acts already at almost 8 months, I am TERRIFIED of the toddler years!! Little miss diva is into throwing some tantrums already and I am not sure how to respond or what to do at such a young age.

For instance, if I take away something she shouldn't be playing with, she screams bloody blue murder. If we are out in public it is seriously embarrassing and people probably think i am hurting her by the way she screams! I quickly distract her and she gets over it though. She has decided that the changing table is basically the worst place in the world to be; so changing diapers and clothes is a major undertaking. She arches her back and tries to roll off in hopes of escaping me putting a diaper on her lol. She also has decided that sitting in the tub isn't the cool thing to do anymore, and insists on standing up the whole time, which makes bath time difficult!

How do you stop an 8 month old from running the show? How should I be reacting to her mini tantrums at this age?
