So I tried to give her smaller pieces for lunch today and it seemed to work. I gave her a few puffs and a few yogurt melts at first to get her to start eating and then she ate some small bits of toast with puree on them and some cheese. I also made sure her water was nearby but she refused when I offered it.

At that age most babies dont chew properly. My 11 month old acts like she is chewing but mostly sucks on stuff and then swallows. I agree that once you see gag maybe give her some water? before letting her proceed?

@BelugaBean: Try doing it from the start. It might be that once LO starts to gag, anything that goes into her mouth afterwards will just make her gag since the reflex is there and heightened?

My son didn't really gag while eating but he did throw up from certain foods- pasta especially. I think it was because he wasn't really "chewing" any of it because you could see the chunks of food he threw up. I asked the pediatrician and they weren't really concerned at all- they pretty much said some kids are just go through a puking phase (he was throwing up formula too some days). He also only had 2 teeth at 9 months. I felt like he wasn't really ready so I backed off a good amount of solids. He was trying different foods at day care but we were really doing mostly purees or yogurt at home until a few weeks ago (1 yr). Since then I've tried all kinds of foods and we really haven't had any issues, even though he still doesn't have that many more teeth.

@mediagirl: It actually even happened when I mashed up the pieces in my fingers and gave them to her.

She can eat cheese just fine and she had pretty much no problems with mushrooms. I'll try again today, maybe with bananas since I know they're soft enough. And I'll try to make the pieces even smaller.

She could just have a more sensitive gag reflex. I would try making the pieces of sweet potato smaller or try a different food. Maybe cut a cheese stick into slices, then cut it into four pieces. Or steam some broccoli and cut the florets small. I cut my food sizes WAY back when M first started eating b/c she had the same problem. She didn't throw up but she gagged a lot. Now I'm gradually making pieces bigger and monitoring her.

LO will be 9 months old on Thursday so we've tried to slowly start the transition to table foods from purees. We've been working on it here and there for a few weeks. Twice this weekend, though, when we tried, it ended with her throwing up all over the place.

We tried with bread and sweet potatoes (two separate times). I know both were soft enough for her to eat and in small enough pieces. Both times, she did okay for a bit and then all of a sudden started gagging. We knew that was somewhat normal so we let her work it out. Then a few minutes later, after getting another bite, she would start choking. She was gasping for air and last night she actually started to rapidly turn red (which I can only assume was going to turn to blue eventually). We got the piece out of her throat and then she threw up everywhere. This happened the first time too, only she was able to cough the piece out herself before throwing up everywhere.

DH said maybe it was because she wasn't drinking fluids with her meal. But she won't drink with her meal, I've tried. And she's just fine with puffs and yogurt melts. She can eat those without even gagging. Even chunky purees make her start gagging though.

She has her 9 month appointment Friday so I plan to ask about it then too but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this is happening? Is there anything we can do? Maybe she's just not ready?

Edit: She does pick up puffs and yogurt melts by herself really well but with other foods, she seems to prefer one of us feeding her (although we're working on her feeding herself). Also, she acts like she's chewing but with some of the pieces, she's obviously not, as they come up whole. So she's going through the motion of chewing but maybe holding it in the middle of her mouth so it doesn't get mashed up.
