@sorrycharlie: were you able to get a prescription for All purpose nipple ointment?? That stuff seriously healed my nips in like two days.

Have you had LO's latch looked at (I don't remember)? Could she possibly be tongue tied?I wouldn't think that the thrush pain would come and go so quickly, over two feeds. Are you still having the throbbing pain when you're not nursing?

So is it possible to have pink nipples without it being thrush? I have another 4 days of diflucan but the past 2 days I caved and used some lanolin because my nipples were not healing without it.

Within 2 feeds, breastfeeding was back to bring painless with exception of minor, dull (intermittent) breast pain that I thought was a clogged duct (since gone).

However as of last night, latch is back to painful & nipples are still pink. Is thrush back? Or is this just raw nipples? So frustrated that I don't know what's going on!!

@MungBean: yikes. well the pain after she nurses is few and far between now, and latch on I think may or may not be from her stinky latch and the trauma from the nutso-mastitis nursing we did. I have little welts on either side of the nipple where she latches (almost like on the ends of a 'crease' type thing). feels like a bruise to the touch!! ugh..

@sorrycharlie: the first round of diflucon didn't work for me :( I never had white patches on my nipples, but the shooting pain and itchiness didn't go away until I also used yeast cream, bacitracin, and sterilized everything :( you might want to try a yeast cream...

@sorrycharlie: I think everyone's experience with it is difference. I didn't have the intense pain... I had intense pain from the ITCHING. It was the worst itching I've had in my life. I never really noticed that it got worse until it got better though. But that MAY be because we'd had thrush for weeks before I finally went to the doctor about it. I only went to the doctor because DS was having a nursing strike.

@sorrycharlie: Your OB or pedi should be able to write a prescription for you. It needs to be compounded, which not all pharmacies do. Here's the ingredients: http://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=76:all-purpose-nipple-ointment-apno&catid=5:information&Itemid=17

Good luck! I am hoping that this plus the diflucan plus the mastitis meds plus the probiotics = no pain in the next few days. Fingers crossed for both of us :)

@sorrycharlie: I also started on diflucan, but I only have pulls for 5 days for some reason? I also got a prescription for all purpose nipple ointment. Supposedly this stuff work miracles to heal nipples, ease pain, and actually prevent thrush. So far, today I've noticed that the throbbing pains are less frequent and less intense. The latch on is still painful for the first 5 seconds, but it definitely better, and breast feeding on general is much less painful (knock on wood, don't want to jinx us!). Do you have pain while LO is eating or just when she latches?

@hilsy85: how are you feeling? any better?

@MungBean: @Thehistoryofus: @Coco Bee: so I have heard that the thrush gets worse before it gets better, but what does that refer to? I started the 15-day course antifungal (diflucan) on saturday night (took 2 pills, and then 1 pill daily sunday/monday/today). the white disappeared from my nipple after 2 days (by sunday night/ monday morning). but my nipples still REALLY HURT when she latches. Like, f-bomb hurt. I don't know, though, if it's the thrush or just trauma - we went from using a nipple shield with every feed and only using positions she was good at, to not using a shield and more aggressive, round the clock, every position nursing to kick the clogged duct. I also still occasionally have the stab pain in my breast tissue.

@hilsy85: yeah I had the pain for a couple days before I noticed the white on my nipple--I assumed I'd bruised myself trying to massage the clogged duct! The white I almost ignored - it was a small spot in the lines like where the milk comes out, I assumed it was milk, but it didn't disappear in the shower. The shooting/stabbing pain was worse right after she ate but would randomly happen throughout the day. If they do treat you, treat LO even if there aren't any signs, or you'll pass it back & fort. I've been vigilant about hot water hand washing before & after feeds and diaper changes, hot water & vinegar washing towels daily as well as anything that my breasts or her mouth touch (spitup, drool..), & sterilizing pacifiers, syringes & pump parts nightly. I also put any meds (vitamin d drops, little tummies, nystatin) in a bathroom Dixie cup & use a different syringe (that I can sterilize) to administer it so I don't contaminate the bottles and transfer the yeast around. Also changing bra pads with every feeding & taking 2 probiotic pills daily. Total pain in the arse but the white is off my nipples! Hoping its working..

@sorrycharlie: I'm not on any meds yet...the pedi said if I'm still in pain on Monday that I shoul go in, so maye shell prescribe something then? It's just annoying because I don't know if I have it--the pain is the only symptom I have. In the meantime, I've started taking a probiotic and garlic pills, which aRe supposed to help fight the yeast.

@MungBean: yikes! That's how we got it - from the Keflex. I'm hoping since my mastitis med is over Wednesday and I'm on the thrush meds for 2 weeks from yesterday that it'll kick it!

@hilsy85: I haven't tried the vinegar rinse, but I'm taking ibuprofen every 6 hours and put an ice cube in a Baggie to put in my nipple before she latches. What day of antibiotics are you on? I'm on day 3 (3rd dose tonight) and I've already noticed the pain lessen. Still a, 'f*** f*** f***' worthy latch but the pain goes away, where before I actually had to use labor pain management techniques to get through it!

@T-Mom: I definitely think so..and the side it's on (or starting on..) is the side with the trauma from bad latch, so there was definitely an opening for it. blegh.

@mrs. wagon: @mrbee: hot water + high heat would be fantastic. I would use paper towels....but after a shower that might be tricky! maybe just for my chest..LOL

@Coco Bee: luckily she doesn't have it yet! I'm so glad. she's so miserable already from my antibiotic! I noticed white on my nipple and I have really horrible pain when she latches, and throbbing pain after she nurses. so we're kicking it in the butt before it gets bad. her pedi said there were no spots in her mouth and that she looked good, but we're sterilizing and putting me on antibiotics as a precaution.

my OB put me on diflucan and she has a prescription ready in case she develops it, nystatin. let's hope after the 15 days is up that we're in the clear for awhile! funny how all my fears of breastfeeding have been tested already!

I had it really badly for months and it was AWFUL.

We used gentian violet to clear it up and that worst part about it was my boobs and his mouth were purple for 2 weeks. We got REALLY strange looks in public. So we hardly ever left the house. It was summer so it was hard not to though.

One thing I did that my dr told me to that helped a lot was cut out all sugar and grain. For the entire month of June I didn't eat sugar at all (not even raw honey... only fruit was the closest I came to sugar). No grain - no rice, bread, pasta, etc. I made a lot of veggie stir fries and green smoothies. It was hard but DS was crying during nursing because it hurt and I was itching my breasts SO much there were scratches and cuts. It was AWFUL.

I boiled everything and washed my bras and his blankets/towels in hot cycle.

oh no :( so sorry. You should get one of those microwave sterilizing bags from Medela-- no boiling necessary. Just drop bottles/nipples/pacis/pump parts in, a few oz of water, and microwave for 1:30.

as for clothes and towels, washing then drying on high heat should do it.
