UPDATE: My nipples seemed to be getting better yesterday after the 1 dose of diflucan and using Lotrimin. However this morning the pain was back to being excruciating and my nipples have huge cracks and are bleeding and stinging. I contacted my OBGYN office and they said their protocol is to try Bactroban for 2 weeks first. I googled and Bactroban is an antibiotic. I asked the nurse if it would make it worse but she said it's their protocol and if it doesn't work they'll go back to Diflucan. Has this helped for anyone? I'm really doubtful I should even take this, but feel as though they're the "experts" so I suppose they know what they're doing? DH is also picking up Monistat for me to try instead of Lotrimin.

@2littlepumpkins: Just put in a message to the ped about the probiotic. Hopefully it will be okay and will help!

@MamaB: So far I've just been using Lotrimin on my nipples after nursing/pumping at the dr.'s suggestion. Is Nystatin supposed to be better?

@MrsSRS: Yeah we decided to just go on with nursing as normal since everything I'ver read says it's okay, but man I was crying the whole way through it this morning :/

@Kbee: ah I see. I'd call the pediatrician about the probiotic. I think it's either florastor or culturelle (I think florastor, which is a yeast, it not the candida yeast that usually causes thrush and some say can help against it too) says 2 months and up? I asked a pharmacist who basically didn't know but it's actually 250mg which is the adult dose anyway. But yeah i would want to try the probiotic.

If you pump you have to carefully sterilize everything, so I'm not sure it will help. Sweet that your DH is trying to think of helpful things, though. I say pump or nurse whichever hurts less. Also, if you use reusable nursing pads don't forget to wash those in very hot water also.

Make sure to rub Nystatin on your nipples too. I ended up needing more than the Nystatin and 2 doses of Diflucan. My midwife called in APNO and that took care of it on my end (the Nystatin had cleared up LOs)

Thanks wise women of HB!

@Truth Bombs: Okay, so maybe just one is normal then. Good!

@2littlepumpkins: He is on antibiotics for an infection, the first didn't work so he's on a second one. It's just one piece of the puzzle that made me realize we had thrush!

@.twist.: Walking around topless now, haha, thank you! This takes me back to the early days of nursing...so not fun. So sorry you had to deal with it multiple times :/

@Kemma: Oh geez, only 35%!? I don't like those odds. I plan on doing that with my bras too, but I'm little concerned they're going to shrink in the hot water?

My husband is suggesting we give my DS bottles of pumped milk and I'll pump, to reduce the risk of more transmission of yeast, but does that matter if we're both being treated?

Nystatin / Nilstat only works in 35% of cases so if it doesn't work you need to ask for something else (Daktarin gel worked for us). Make sure you sterilise any paci's, pump parts, teething toys etc, and wash your bras in a hot wash with vinegar to prevent reinfection.

Thrush sucks so I hope you can get rid of it quickly!

I walked around the house topless for a while to let things air out after each feed (clean nipples, let air). That helped a lot.

Otherwise, I hope it goes really quickly. Our thrush was on and off my entire nursing experience. Hopefully you don't have to endure that.

No advice but that's the same dose as for a vaginal yeast infection. By antibiotics I'm assuming you're talking about the nystatin? Because anything else (ie not an anti fungal) could be making it worse.

You're doing everything right. I boiled all pacis and bottle nipples every night and washed sippy cups every night on the sanitize setting of my dishwasher.

Honestly, it sounds like you're doing all the right things. I don't have much additional advice except that hopefully it will pass quickly. When we had thrush I was given two pills and told to only the take the second one if I still had symptoms 4 days later (I think it was 4 days)... so one pill is not surprising.

My 7-month old is on his second course of antibiotics and after a few days of worsening nipple pain, and connecting the dots with his new diaper rash, I realized we are dealing with thrush! His pediatrician sent in prescriptions for nystatin for my DS, a nystatin cream for his diaper rash, and a 1x dose of 150mg of fluconazole for me. I was thinking that fluconazole would be more than 1 day, so I'm a little confused. I'm waiting to hear back from a LC, who can hopefully answer some of my questions.

Anyone have any other tips to beat this as quickly as possible? Nursing and pumping are excruciating and now my nipples are starting to bleed a little. I plan to use a vinegar and water solution after nursing/pumping and apply Lotrimin. We're also going to wash clothes, towels, etc. carefully. I'm guessing we should also put away his soft toys and wash his other toys every night. And I also got a probiotic with acidophilus in it, which I've heard can be good to give to the baby too, but it has 20 billion CFUs. Would he need a whole capsule?
