I was under the impression that antibiotics caused thrush ... that's always been the correlation for me, get antibiotics end up with thrush. When I have it, I get Fluconazole if gentian violet doesn't work. GV is good for both you and baby. Call around to health food and natural food stores. I only know local sources (not chain stores) that carry it.
Dr. Newman's candida (aka thrush) protocol is my go to treatment resource - http://www.positivelybreastfeeding.ca/learn/Newman/CandidaProtocol.htm
Hope that helps!

We were never diagnosed with thrush but I was having burning pains in my breasts so I self-treated. Like @LeeLee I took grapefruit seed extract (250mg 3x a day); it is available in both pill and liquid form. I noticed the pain was less after the first two doses and gone by the second day; I now take GSE daily as a preventive (LC and pedi both said it was alright). I've heard good things about Gentian violet but it will turn everything it comes into contact with a purple color so be prepared.

DD and I had thrush it was horrible. She was on meds for about 3 weeks that cleared it up. I actually took Grapefruit Seed Extract pills which cleared it up for me within a couple days (dr wouldnt perscribe me snyrhing only told me to try Lomitrin which didnt work. Gentian violet is great for instant reliefs though. I drove everywhere trying to find it and eventually found it at Walmart for $3, go figure!

@shopaholic: I thought I had thrush but only had th pain as a symptom. I was treated for it but also found out I had vasospams so who knows what the issue really was.

Mrs pen also struggled with thrush for a while, I think she used Genetian violet successfully!

@Kemma: omg! I think I read one of your old comments about the cheek trick. I did try putting it on the side of her cheeks the 2nd time and I think it did help. I will keep the Daktarin gel in mind. How did you know it wasn't gone or that it was gone? The only thing I have to go on is the white lips and the pain in my breasts?

The key with the Nystatin is to make sure it coats her mouth and doesn't get rinsed out. My Well Child Nurse recommended lying my DD on the floor and slowly syringing drops in towards her cheeks, apparently it makes it a lot harder to spit out!

FWIW Nystatin doesn't have a great success rate so if it doesn't clear up your LO's thrush you might want to ask for Daktarin gel. It took almost three months to completely get rid of the thrush for both of us, hopefully yours will clear up much sooner!

No tips but bless your heart.

@Anagram: Oh that would be awful if that's what she feels! :(

@coacheswife123: @LaineysMom: In a regular bottle? I will try that tonight. I did mix the probiotic with a little bit of expressed milk for her. Glad I can give the Zantac that way too.

@highwire: Did you get it too? I know I was reading about how to wash everything. I'm kind of paranoid, but some stuff I cannot wash in hot and with bleach. But I've thrown a TON of stuff in the hot wash today and so worried about contamination now!

@photojane: How old was she when you did that? I couldn't get her to close her lips! :/

@oliviaoblivia: Thanks! Yeah, the breast pain was really painful a couple of days ago, when I suspected it. But I didn't see any of the white cottage cheese spots on either of us, so I thought it was something else. Did the very very slow dropper for the second dose today and I think I got most of it in her. I hope ours goes away in 2 weeks! She has the Nystatin for 30 days.

@hilsy85: Thanks for the link! I'll read that tonight! Did you get thrush too? Good to know about the APNO. I'm on the generic for Diflucan I think - Fluconazole.

Goodness! Honey, I'm so sorry--thrush is AWFUL. Check out this website for a lot of good info: http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-CP

That all purpose nipple ointment is good for thrush as well because it has an antifungal in it. Are you on diflucan? Thrush can be painful for babies so once it is cleared up, that might help with the fussiness as well. Good luck!

We had thrush.... :-( sorry you're dealing with it. I never saw the white spots on my nipples, but that painful burning I'll never forget. LO took the nystatin for two weeks and every dose was a battle. I would do it in really small increments so that there was never enough in her mouth for her to spit out. And I'd hold her lips closed.
After just a day her white spots went away. We have been lucky to not have any flare ups since.
Hope everything clears up soon. Get better little K!

I don't have any thrush advice, but the only time I had to give S medicine I used a dropper & put it all the way in the back of her mouth, then pulled the dropper out & held her lips closed. She was angry, but she swallowed all of it!

Awww! Poor you and poor LO. I am no help and can't answer any of your questions since my LO is only on the way...

But I once got thrush in my mouth as an adult, when my immune system was realllly low after a 3-week bout of dysentery in Vietnam and it was surprisingly painful. It felt like I had strep throat! So your LO will probably feel a lot better after getting antibiotics.

I took K into the pediatrician this morning since I was concerned about her increasing spitting up and worried she has acid reflux or some kind of food allergy. She's also been fussier than normal and had to sleep on my chest the entire night.

While we were there, the doctor was concerned about the whiteness around her lips. She always has this whiteness on her lips, especially after feeding. I always just suspected it was from the Lanolin or ointment I was using for my nipples combined with the milk making it look white. After feedings, it just becomes drier looking. FTM fail! Apparently this was a sign of THRUSH!

I actually had looked up the signs of thrush a couple days ago because my boobs have been hurting so much. But I didn't have any white stuff on my nipples, and all the baby pictures showed white rough patches on baby's tongue. So I didn't think that was it. Well, it is. Apparently we've got thrush.

AND acid reflux and maybe some GI issues he said. So now I am on antibiotics (hopefully this will help with the sharp, burning pains) and K is on Nystatin for a month! :( I have to give it to her 3x's a day! How did you give it to your LO? I'm sure she spit out almost half of the first dose I tried to give her. Stupid medicine dispenser paci I got in a first aid kit is broken too! I need to go get another one if those work. Did they work for your LO? Or did you mix it in with some milk? I'm BF'ing, but I can pump some to mix if that works?

She's also to take liquid Zantac and probiotics. I think it will be a full-time job just to give her all these doses throughout the day!

If you and your LO had thrush, how long did it last? And how did you help make giving meds better? I read a lot of people gave Gentian Violet? Where do you get this and did you give it in addition to the prescriptions? Any additional advice is appreciated! The doc said it can be so hard to get rid of - months even!
