@Foodnerd81: @.twist.: it turned out to be another clogged duct & milk blister. I made a rice sock and massaged and it finally cleared. Things are back to normal now--no more pain. I ordered some lethicin so I am hoping that will help with preventing the clogged ducts.

@lawbee11: mine are similar right now. Have you stopped using nip cream? I did a while ago and I think it's because of that. I know every time I use cream my nips feel a lot better almost immediately.

@lawbee11: I stopped doing the water vinegar wipe after getting the all clear from the ped and now my nipples feel even more sore c has been popping on and off while she eats though, so I just don't know what it is. Let me know if you figure yours out.

@lawbee11: I don't know how much this helped but I was wiping my nipples after every feeding with water and vinegar. And I have been super careful with changing my bra every day and not leaving nursing pads in too long or swapping then out. But to be honest they are still pink and a little irritated. I think she's just been nursing a lot and the nips are irritated?

@Foodnerd81: Glad it's not thrush! But now I am experiencing something similar :( What did you do to make yours better? My right nipple is quite pink (but not shiny). No itching, no white spots in LOs mouth. I have no idea why it suddenly hurts when she latches on for about 10 seconds. Doesn't hurt after nursing.

In case anyone comes across this post later on, we went to the ped today and he says it's not thrush! Everything started getting better right after I made the appt pretty much but the dr was nice and didn't make me feel dumb :)

@owlmom: even though it's not thrush the coconut oil seems to be working really well, thanks for the suggestion!

@Foodnerd81: instead of wipes, I just used his little wash cloths with warm water. And I didn't do the vinegar thing with my nipples because it cleared up before I got that desperate. I also second the monistat on baby's bum as well. I hope it clears up ASAP! Totally sounds like thrush though. And the minute I stopped using nursing pads all together is when things started to clear up.

@Foodnerd81: if you have coconut oil, that's great for fighting thrush diaper rash. Clean the bottom gently, make sure it's completely dry, then rub some coconut oil on it. Or you can use monistat cream (like what you use to cure lady yeast infections). Both can be good treatments for you, too. Some people have a lot of luck washing with vinegar and water, too. And wash everything that touches your breasts and milk and baby's bottom with soap and hot water. Sterilize bottles and pump parts at least once a day.

Because of the nursing pad thing, there's a good chance it's thrush. Definitely check with your healthcare provider (LC, midwife, or OBGYN) and your baby's pediatrician. Better to check and be fine than to have thrush and not start dealing with it immediately.

Also what should I use on her bum- water and paper towel instead of wipes? Butt paste on the rash?

@Foodnerd81: yep! That sounds like a thrush bum rash. Let it air out if you can.

What helped mine is washing my nipples between each feeding and then putting monistat on them. Which was doctor recommended and safe for babe. I had thrush for a month and that's what ended up working best. The meds didn't work well for us!

Mine didn't feel like broken glass either, but it did indeed feeling like pins and needles in my nipples. Nursing hurt, especially for the first 30 seconds or so ( I timed it). Also, when I wasn't nursing i just had a general uncomfortable feeling in my boobs.

Is the rash on her bum raw? That's how I knew we had thrush.

Get checked out!

Sounds like it could be thrush, my LO clicked for other reasons but I had an LC explain that it's often from baby trying to itch her tongue while feeding.

Definitely chat to your midwife about diagnosing you but both you and baby will need to be treated.

@Foodnerd81: I'm only 3wks in, but I get the same shooting pins & needles feeling at random times... most often after feeding, but sometimes before. It's not painful, just strange. I've noticed I get it more in the evenings/at night though, so attributed it to something else and have tried not to worry. I'm sure our health visitor said we both would need to be treated if it was thrush, so I'd probably go to your doctor first, if I was you. Though over here, mama and baby have the same doctor, so I'd just rock up there.

@hilsy85: No to all. It feels like shooting pins and needles, but not glass. And perhaps a teeny bit shiny because they are pink, but not itchy and not really shiny. Maybe (hopefully) I'm worried for nothing...

How did you know your had thrush?
C is almost 10 weeks old. Breastfeeding has been fairly easy for the last few weeks. However over the last few days I have felt a shooting kind of pain in my breasts-- not a severe pain, but like a sharp pins and needles feeling that shoots through the breast, if that makes sense. This happens while nursing and after. The tips of my nipples are quite pink, but I thought that was just because of long nursing sessions and being used as a pacifier. I was very dumb the other day and left the same pair of nursing pads on for 2 days because I'd run out. I don't have any visible cracks on the nipples and haven't been on antibiotics.

C does not have white patches is her mouth, other than her usual milk tongue, but has been clicking/smacking while nursing more than usual, and even makes a throat clearing like clicking noise when not nursing. She has a little diaper rash.

Does that sound like thrush? Whose doctor do I ever go to for a diagnosis, the pediatrician or my midwife or someone else? Anything to be done now?
