@shopaholic: I remember the LC saying if you could scrape it off it was scum and if you couldn't, it was thrush.

@lamariniere: That's good to know! I tried scraping his tongue tonight with a wet gauze, but he got very upset and I could get to the back of the tongue where it is.

@lamariniere: OLD post, but I just wanted to check if your DD did have thrush? Thanks to your post, I never heard of milk scum, but this is what I suspect both babies have.

We had thrush twice and I nevertheless let pain in my boobs, just a bit of itching. Her tongue was WHITE though, milk scum had nothing on this.

Hum, I just tried to stick a washcloth and then a finger in her mouth and couldn't really get to the white stuff to wipe at it...maybe I will wait to get DH's help.

My LO's tongue was always white, and it was never thrush. I agree with trying to wipe it off. Even if it doesn't come off easily it could be fine. If there are no other symptoms, I wouldn't treat it.

Does it wipe off? If so, it's just milk scum. If it's bumpy, and sticks, it's thrush.

Today I took DD to the ped for her 12 week check up. My normal ped was out and another doctor saw her instead. When she looked in DD's mouth and saw that her tongue was white, she immediately said thrush and gave me a prescription.

I honestly don't think either of us have thrush. Her tongue has been white since the beginning (EBF), and I just did a quick search on thrush and neither of us have any symptoms...no pain, other white patches, nursing problems, etc. I also remember that DS's tongue was white just like hers and an LC at the time said it was just milk scum.

I'm hesitant to start a treatment if I truly feel that it is unwarranted. Thoughts?
