@pastemoo: Thanks, I'll try the cotton ball! I've been using qtips and it's helped a bit but it hasn't completely cleared yet.

@starlitsky: Just keeping at it! We used a cotton ball to hold the medicine on her tongue. I started with some of the medicine on the cotton ball, then just let out the medicine onto the ball as she sucked on it. And I held on for dear life, highly concerned she might swallow it/choke.

Day 21, I think we're clear! Medicine 4x/day is amazingly hard to keep up with.

@pastemoo: that's good!
I applied the coconut oil to my nipples. Which got some into baby's mouth when feeding.

Finally improving! Left is day 1, then day 4, day 6 (which looks worse than day 4! That's when I posted this), day 11. Feels like way longer than 11 days.

@Kemma: I'd love to know where this number comes from! I've seen a lot on the internet but no research that uses the same numbers. The research compares to "control" and I don't know what the control is. From this review article it looks like nystatin has a clinical cure rate between 29 and 54%. :/

A new paper came out this February, I will try the q-tip, and if we're still fighting this next visit, I will see if the pastilles are available http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27042008
and then the gentian violet. Thanks so much!

@Iced Tea: what did you add coconut oil to? to topical ointment?

I actually got a prescription for gentian violet, instead of nystatin.
I also had to cut sugar and grains from my diet because they feed yeast and the infection was on my breasts as well.

Good luck- it's not fun at all!

We put it on our finger or a qtip and rubbed it all around her mouth. It did take awhile to clear up.

Thrush is awful. I had it really bad and three rounds of difluclan reduced it but didn't eliminate it. I gave my baby nystatin, which seemed to work for her, though she didn't have it bad. Surprisingly, adding coconut oil finally did the trick for me.

After that, anytime I felt it coming back, I used the coconut oil on my breasts (some gets in baby's mouth while feeding), and it would go away quickly.

Nystatin is a pretty useless med (I think it has a success rate of less than 65%!) so if it hasn't worked by now I'd be asking for a different med. We went through three bottles of nystatin with no improvement but Daktarin gel cleared the thrush in three days!

My other advice is to make sure you're being treated too (to avoid passing it back and forth) and to sterilise and hot wash anything that comes in contact with baby's mouth or your breast (if you're nursing, of course).

Thrush is a shit of a thing so fingers crossed you can get rid of it soon!

I need parent-hacks for thrush treatment!

I have nystatin from the doctor and I have very well cleared up everything in the front of her mouth but the back part of her tongue and roof of her mouth---I need a new strategy!

The bottle says to put a syringe in each cheek, the doctor said if that doesn't work, try to put the medicine on a gauze pad to hold it in place a little longer. I am terrible at that.

How did you get the medicine to stay in place? How did you get rid of baby thrush?

Thanks!
