@shopaholic: Haha honestly I just stopped all treatment cold turkey. I'd been doing all that stuff so long that I was just so over it and wanted to see what would happen. I probably should take the probiotics at least but haven't for a while.

@JerricaBenton: Yeah - that does sound really similar to our situation! Cultures would be genius! At least for their mouths right? How hard could it be? Especially to confirm when it's over!

What are you doing nowadays for it? I'm just doing the vinegar solution and APNO now. And washing bras every wear.

Your situation sounds so similar to ours. I saw a white tongue on L and convinced myself via google that she had thrush. She didn't have any other patches in her mouth. I had sore red nipples. I started with the vinegar wash and probiotics. The pedi gave us the nystatin and I treated LO and myself but nothing changed. I called my OB for diflucan and they wanted to see me first. She thought my nipples looked ok but gave me the prescription. Nothing changed. I called for another diflucan and went in to see another doctor and she was like, 'why do you even think you have thrush?' I explained the whole deal and she said she really thought my nipples were just tender and L's tongue was just milk tongue. She suggested I use lanolin or EMNB and see if it improved. We happened to go to the pedi that week and she said just stop the thrush treatment and see what happens. L's tongue is the same, but I'm now pretty sure it's just milk, and my nipples feel pretty much normal. I really don't know why they don't do cultures for thrush but I don't think we ever had it at all.

@Mrs. Stroller: yeah I only wear each nursing tank or bra once before washing in hot water. I'm compulsive about those and all our washcloth burp cloths.

@cheert16: Sorry! I'd probably call to see if they could move the appt up sooner. Hope you don't have it!

@T.H.O.U.: how long did you have it? And you froze and used the milk later?

I kept going with the milk and never threw any away. I was really concerned my baby had it because I had the bad symptoms in my breasts but the pediatrician said the milk tongue was normal.

I think that we have thrush! I have been having shooting pains in my breasts for a few days and LO has had the white jelly looking stuff on his lips the last few mornings when he has woken up (although it wipes right off) B has a pediatrician appt on Thursday- should I mention it then? Or call earlier? Should I call my ob or pcp?

@shopaholic: I never stopped saving milk - that stuff is liquid gold! I still give M milk from back when I had thrush now and he's never had it since the first time when he was a couple weeks old (he's 17m now).

I knew it was gone when the itchiness went away, but I didn't stop using the vinegar/water twice a day until he was a year old - so for 8+ months. I just had it on my dresser and made washing my boobs a part of my morning/evening routine. It took me so long to get rid of it (didn't try vinegar until I'd tried everything else and failed) that I didn't want to risk getting it again. Even now I only wear tanks and bras once between washings.

@Mrs. Stroller: thanks! I was doing the vinegar solution before the GSE solution. Maybe I should try that again. How did you know when it was gone away for good? And when did you feel was okay to start saving the milk? Thanks!

I had a huge battle with thrush and finally cured it using 50/50 water/vinegar solution before/after every feeding. I then did the washes before bed and in the morning every day for months.

In re: milk, I froze all mine and gave it to him later. Never more than one bottle a day from when I had thrush, but I didn't worry too much about it and it never came back.

So we were told we had Thrush about 5 weeks ago. It was from K's pediatrician. He gave me a dose of Diflucan for 2 weeks. I finished it. K has Nystatin. Neither of us had "typical" thrush symptoms beyond:
- Sharp, shooting pain in my breasts & crack nipples for me.
- White, clear-ish (almost looks like jelly) on K's lips.

After a couple of weeks, K got a little bit of white on the back of her tongue, but it hasn't changed in weeks, with or without Nystatin, brushing, or Grapefruit Seed Extract diluted solution. The pediatrician said he's not even positive what she has is thrush. Everything is stable.

My question comes to expressed & pumped milk. Everything I've read says to NOT freeze or save milk from when you have thrush. KellyMom says:
"If you do pump extra milk during thrush treatment, do not discard it. Label the milk so that you know it was pumped during a thrush outbreak, and then go ahead and freeze it."

Okay...and then what? They say if you give the frozen milk, the yeast isn't killed, and can later re-infect and start the cycle over. I'm scared to save it, but I probably waste at least 4 oz. of milk (just from forceful letdown, not even pumping) everyday. I've been saving in the fridge in case she takes a bottle for some odd reason, but literally throwing away bottles of milk every week now. :( So sad.

If you had thrush, when and how did you know it was gone and okay to save the milk? The ped was just nonchalant about it. My OB couldn't really tell anything as I don't have any white patches or anything. I feel like I'm in limbo indefinitely...
