My niece was 4 and my SIL bought a thumb guard. She broke the habit in about a week of wearing it. Lately, i feel like she has them in her mouth all the time. I now make a concerted effort to keep reminding her to take them out - reminders that she is a big girl and big girls don't suck their fingers. I've even resorted to telling her that the dentist will pull out all of her teeth! I've become so desperate because she'll run while her fingers are in her mouth and has fallen a number of times. She'll be 3 Sunday. Her dentist said just to casually remind her to take it out if it isn't a sleep time. I sucked my finger until I was around 9 so hopefully she stops herself earlier. DS (1) sucks his two fingers. I've noticed little blisters on his. The dentist noticed it immediately, but it provides a comfort for her so I'm ok with it for now. The dentist said we could wrap it in band aids to discourage it if we wanted. When she first started finger-sucking, she was happy with any two she could get...whichever got in there first, she went with. Now (almost 6 months old) she almost always sucks the first two. I try to discourage it as much as possible and I notice recently that she's not doing it as often. </p> <p>Our bigger kid has been doing it recently (almost 4!) and never did before. She sees the baby doing it and she has a couple of classmates that do it. Dentist says we should start trying to get him to break the habit I don't see how that will happen. He doesn't seem to care what the other "big" kids are doing, what he can get as a reward, even the nail polish only works for a few days. Its habitual...he sometimes doesn't even know he's sucking.</p> <p>I'd try not to push too much if the child is resistant. I think that is one mistake my husband and I made. Did they? Did they stop on their own or did you "help" that along? Our 3 year old sucks her thumb. She lives by her thumb. Our dentist gave us the okay to let her wean on her own for now, and that was our plan all along.</p> <p>Full disclosure, I totally delete all pictures of her sucking her thumb. :) </p>
