M started at about 2 months and although she doesn't do it constantly I still worry it will become a habit. I pull it out and say no every single time I see it.<br /> She doesn't do it for self soothing bc she never does it at bed or nap time. Nor consistently enough. She just puts everything in her mouth including her fingers, fist and thumb.</p> <p>My husbands niece is 3 and she is constantly sucking her thumb. I had a friend who sucked her thumb as a child and to this day still needs to have something in her mouth! She self soothes! It's great! At 4 months, she does a better job putting herself to sleep than I used to! I feel like I struck gold! </p> <p>I should probably be concerned about it when she's older, but I figure we'll tackle it then. It was much worse when I was younger. She's 15 months right now and still sucks her thumb to sleep or for comfort. Our pediatrician said it's fine until she's about 4-5 years old. I don't think there's much you can do about it. It soothes her, it helps her sleep, it makes her happy. Sometimes my LO will wake up to nurse to make her gums feel better. During the day though she just chews on her fingers. Esp at night in the crib. Im very very anti thumb sucking! So, my luck our first baby is all about it. Every time I see her with it in her mouth I remove it and give her the pacifier.
